Scottsdale, Ariz. – Reserve forward Jessica Austin scored both goals for Biola University (9-6- 1, 6-3-0 GSAC) in a 2-0 Golden State Athletics Conference women's soccer victory over Arizona Christian University (4-10-1, 1-8 GSAC), Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Scottsdale Sports Complex. Biola received votes for the Oct. 23 NAIA's Top 25 National Coaches' poll.
Now finished with its home schedule, ACU plays its final two matches of the 2012 season at Concordia University (8-8-0, 3-6-0 GSAC) in Irvine, Calif., Saturday, Oct. 27, at 2 p.m., and at Soka University (2-7-2) in non-conference action in Aliso Viejo, Calif., Sunday, Oct. 28, at 4 p.m.
Austin tallied her fourth goal of the season at the 38:41 mark of the first half and was assisted by senior forward Natalie Oliver, who earned her second assist of the season. After receiving Oliver's diagonal pass, Austin raced around an ACU defender and won a one-on-one battle with ACU's freshman goalkeeper Sydney Roller-Sotak (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert H.S.).
Austin scored her fifth goal on a similar play at 48:04 of the second half, just three minutes after the halftime intermission. Senior midfielder Taylor Lundquist was credited with her third assist of the season. Austin accounted for five of Biola's total of 21 shots and four of Biola's 10 shots on goal in the contest, and junior forward Chrissy King attempted four shots, one on goal. Biola outshot ACU, 16-7, and led 10-3 in shots on goal and 4-1 in corner kicks.
Biola goalkeeper Briana Williams made three saves while earning the shutout victory, and Roller-Sotak saved eight Biola shots on goal, four in each half. Williams saved shots on goal by sophomore defender Mindy Kleppe (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista H.S.) at 52:01, and freshman midfielder Jesslyn Jana (Placerville, Calif./El Dorado H.S.) at 53:29. Jana's booming blast from 35 feet out appeared at first to be ticketed for the lower left corner of the Biola net, but Williams dived and knocked the ball away from the right goalpost.
