Concordia Scores GSAC Win Over ACU

Scottsdale, Ariz. - Concordia University, ranked 14th in the Sept. 25 NAIA Top 25 National Coaches' poll, scored all four of its goals in the span of 16 minutes in the first half and defeated host Arizona Christian University, 4-0, in the first Golden State Athletics Conference of the season for both schools, Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Scttsdale Soccer Complex. 

The Firestorm, coached by Carl Cecil (third season), returns to action, Saturday, Sept. 29, against The Master's College (6-1-2), which ranks 23rd in the NAIA, at 11:30 a.m., at Scottsdale Christian Academy. ACU's men's soccer team plays a 2 p.m. match against The Master's College (4-4) as part of Saturday's GSAC doubleheader. 

Freshman midfielder Miranda Canales scored Concordia's second goal of the match on a direct kick from 25 yards out at 32:19 and assisted on CUI's third goal at 35:35, which was scored by freshman forward Alexis Garcia-Irons. Concordia's first goal of the match was an own goal off a corner kick which caromed off the body of an ACU defender into the net at 23:58. Concordia forward Elizabeth Abt added a fourth goal at 39:21, with defender Audrey McKay earning the assist. 

Concordia outshot ACU, 21-4, and led 10-1 in shots on goal and 9-2 in corner kicks. Freshman midfielder Jesslyn Jana (Placerville, Calif./El Dorado H.S.) struck two of ACU's shots. Freshman goalkeeper Sydney Roller-Sotak (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert H.S.) saved six shots in the match, and Concordia's first-half goalkeeper Bekah Garvin saved Jana's only shot on goal, and Megan Ferry faced no shots on goal in the second half.
