Box Score Phoenix, AZ- On Saturday afternoon, Arizona Christian hosted #15 Vanguard and the match resulted in a 6-0 Lion win. Junior Makenna Newman put forth a great effort but it was not enough.
The two halves were nearly mirror images of each other as VUSC scored three goals in each half while producing 14 first half shots and 15 shots in the second half. The two ACU shots were split evenly with a shot in each half.
Despite the Lions controlling most of the run of play, Newman was a force to be reckoned with in the middle as she delivered numerous creative runs while taking both Firestorm shots. In the first half, she hit a shot from 35 yards out right to the VU goalkeeper. Her second half shot was from closer in but the result was the same. Most of her opportunities with the ball resulted in her dribbling past and weaving through several defenders before the third, fourth, or sometimes fifth Lion would finally knock the ball away.
ACU played bend but don't really break defense most of the first half as they only allowed one goal in the first 35 minutes.
But when Vanguard netted two goals just over a minute apart in the final 10 minutes of the half that took some of the wind out of the sails of Arizona Christian.
Vanguard notched their final three goals in the second half at the 50, 66, and 85 minute mark.
Junior Serenity Masterson played 74 minutes of the game in goal and recorded a match high six saves.
The Firestorm will return to action on the Rose Mofford Sports Complex pitch next Saturday against Biola with kick-off slated for 12:00 pm.
