Women's Soccer Scores But Ties At Providence Christian

Box Score

Pasadena, CA- The good news- the Arizona Christian women broke a 12 game scoring drought.  The not so good news- ACU could not hold off Providence Christian as they settled for 1-1 double overtime tie.  Senior Aubrey Wimmer scored the Firestorm goal.

The match started with three shots one from Freshman Taylor Baker and two from Providence Christian in the first 10 minutes.

A foul by the Sea Beggars in the 13th minute opened the door for the Firestorm to break their scoring drought.  Wimmer let the ensuing free kick fly from the right sideline and buried her shot into the left side of the net.  For Wimmer, it was her first goal of the year.

The remainder of the first half saw ACU take three more shots including one from Junior Makenna Newman that required save.

With Arizona Christian's goalkeeper Serenity Masterson looking right into the sun, Providence Christian launched nine first half shots most of the high arching variety.  On one high lob shot, Masterson did not see the ball until it was about to bounce on the ground and used her foot to kick the ball away.

Masterson finished the half with five saves which actually turned out to be all of her saves for the game.

Half number two saw the Firestorm crank off 13 shots forcing PCC's goalkeeper to make eight saves.  They also saw a shot from Junior Kelsey Stipek bounced off the face of the crossbar.  Their best chance to score came in a 12 second scramble in the 77th minute when Newman forced a diving save, Stipek had a rebound attempt blocked, and Junior Delaney Kim hit a shot right at the keeper.

But try as they might they could not get a second goal to find the back of the net.

Defensively, ACU only allowed three shots in the second half but one was mishandled and trickled into the net for the equalizing goal for Providence Christian.

After heading to overtime, the teams managed just five combined shots with only two on goal as the score went final at 1-1.

Odd fact of the day, neither team subbed in one player the entire 110 minutes of action.

Head Coach Alan Berrios stated "Women played a much improved PC side today.  I thought we had the majority of the play but we were not effective. We possessed without a purpose at times and really complicated ourselves. Having said that I have to give credit to PC as they were organized defensively and very disciplined. We created multiple chances in the second half but we couldn't put them away. After giving up a soft goal in the second half the girls continued to work hard but our final product wasn't good enough for the win."

On Saturday, the Firestorm will close out their season with a 2:00 pm contest against Antelope Valley at Rose Mofford Sports Complex.
