Box Score Pasadena, CA- Arizona Christian Women's Soccer opened their 2016 schedule with a 3-1 win over Providence Christian on Saturday morning. Senior Makenna Newman led the charge by scoring the first two goals of the season.
Ninety seconds into the season Newman placed the first shot on goal. Eight minutes later with the second shot of the game, Newman took a feed from Junior Zoe Kalos near the top of the box and buried into the net.
The Firestorm (1-0) finished with 11 first half shots with four coming from Newman. Senior Marissa Stevens launched two shots.
Despite out shooting the Sea Beggars (0-1) 11-1 in the first 45 minutes the score remained 1-0 at the break.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Freshman Kylie Neafus served up a corner kick that found the head of Newman which in turn found the back of the net for a 2-0 ACU edge.
PCC found a little rhythm as they hit four of the next six shots. Kalos cracked both shots for ACU in that stretch. A misplayed ball in the back allowed Providence to find the back of the net and make the game a 2-1 affair with 24 minutes to play.
However, the ACU defense allowed just two more shots the remainder of the game.
With about nine minutes left, Arizona Christian sealed the deal when Freshman Braxton Carhart hit a nice free kick into the box that Freshman Marisa Ortiz flicked into the goal.
One shot was taken the rest of the way.
Senior Serenity Masterson recorded four saves on the day.
Reflecting on the season opener, Director of Soccer Alan Berrios commented, "It was good to start the season on the right foot. Girls worked hard against an improved Providence Christian team and earned a difficult win. Game was very choppy and it took us a while to get into a rhythm. I thought we showed signs of improvement in the defensive third but need to do a better job in the attacking third. Girls created well in the middle third but the quality in the attacking third is not where we need to be yet. We will continue to work hard in preparation for conference play."
On Thursday, the women will return to action with their home opener against La Sierra at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex at 5:00 pm.
