Lady Firestorm Eye Menlo In Postseason Opener

Glendale, Ariz.- ACU Women's Soccer prepares for the quarterfinals of the GSAC Women's Soccer Tournament after capping off a historic regular season (10-4-1, 5-2 GSAC) with a 1-0 win over The Master's. First-year head coach Gina Cormier and the #3-seed Firestorm will host #6-seed Menlo this Saturday morning to kick off their postseason.

The Lady Firestorm cemented themselves as third seed in the upcoming GSAC Women's Soccer Tournament with a gritty 1-0 victory over The Master's. Justyne Underwood had the eventual game-winning goal in the 16th minute, as the ACU defense, including goalkeeper Tayler Wonderly, shut down the opposition. Gina Cormier earned her 10th victory as head coach of ACU Women's Soccer and six seniors (Pearl Vargas, Alyssa Mercado, Rachel Clark, Jadaisha Waahila, Bianca Cruz, and Noemie Antoine) were celebrated as part of Senior Day.

Series Notes

In 12 all-time meetings, ACU is 2-10 against the Menlo College Oaks. Following five straight losses in this series, the Firestorm defeated the Oaks 2-1 in Atherton, California earlier this 2023 season. Justyne Underwood and Cami Mercado both scored once during the first half, and Tayler Wonderly recorded seven saves to secure the road victory. At the time, it was the Firestorm's seventh win of the season.

"The energy level is high on our team going into the GSAC Tournament," Coach Cormier said. "We are proud of our work over the season and are excited to continue to prove ourselves in this tournament. We had a really competitive game against Menlo earlier this season and look forward to what should be an exciting and challenging game in the first round."

Menlo College

The Menlo College Oaks (3-6-2, 2-3-2 GSAC) wrapped up their regular season with a 1-1 tie against Jessup at Wunderlich Field. Both goals in the match were scored in the first period, as Kawai Acopan notched her fourth goal of 2023 in the 41st minute. Haley Dunham led the way in scoring for Menlo during the regular season, recording six goals and 13 shots on goal. Goalkeeper Giorgia Melcore posted 44 saves, three shutouts, a 80.0 save percentage and 2-4-1 record.
