INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
In the Firestorm's first trip to California in 2023, they left no doubt on the field. A staggering 29 shots and 15 shots on goal, ACU overpowered the Antelope Valley Pioneers, who managed 1 shot for the game.Â
Defender Alyssa Mercado struck first in the match, in a sequence that began with a corner kick from Marcella Torres and ended with an assist from Justyne Underwood. Exactly 20 minutes passed and six scoring attempts were made, before the Firestorm broke through for a second goal in the form of Jayme Notgrass receiving a header from Shayla Mobo. The 34th minute marked the first goal for Notgrass as a member of ACU Women's Soccer.
To begin the second period, ACU made a goalie change for the first time this season, replacing Brenna Sonsini with freshman Tayler Wonderly. The Firestorm continued their press on Antelope Valley with two shots on target in the first few minutes of play. The 52nd minute underway, Underwood delivered a corner kick inside to Cadence Peroff who capitalized and increased ACU's lead to 3-0. This latest payoff came as Underwood's third assist of the game and Peroff's first goal in a Firestorm uniform.
Antelope Valley scored their lone goal of the match and first of the season on a penalty kick from Dulce Avalos a few minutes down the line. With a 3-1 advantage, Firestorm coach Gina Cormier had the luxury of resting starters for the rest of the game, and was able to see reserves earn some time on the field. Midfielder Aryanna Day fired off two shots on goal before time expired on ACU's second win of the 2023 season.
