Castagnaro Nationals Bound At CCC Champs

Carlo Castagnaro placed 7th in CCC Championship to punch ticket to nationals
La Grande, Ore. - In arguably the toughest proving ground for the 2024 NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championships, ACU Wrestling claimed 10th out of 11 teams (17.0 points) in the Cascade Conference Championships hosted by Eastern Oregon University. Menlo took home the team hardware, outdoing Providence (MT) by 25.5 team points in the two-day event (156.0 to 133.5).

Carlo Castagnaro punched his ticket to nationals as the lone Firestorm to automatically qualify with a seventh-place finish in the 165-pound bracket. Saturday marked the senior's second time moving on to the national tournament, having qualified in 2022.

Terrell Kinlicheenie was the top placer for the Firestorm, earning sixth in the 141-pound weight class. The sophomore just missed out on guaranteeing a spot in Park City, Kansas due to the CCC allotting five wrestlers in his bracket to be nationally bound. However, Kinlicheenie contributed the most points (5.0) to the Firestorm's total.

Isaiah Marquez and Kaden Martin also notched multiple points, stacking 3.0 and 2.5 points respectively.

Besides Castagnaro, the Firestorm will have to wait until Tuesday to see if they earn any of the 30 remaining at-large bids to the NAIA National Championships. Bids will be released by 3:00 PM MST via the NAIA national office.

COACH MICHAEL BUTTERFIELD'S THOUGHTS

"We are proud of all of our wrestlers' efforts and hard work throughout the season," Coach Butterfield said. "Carlo Castagnaro automatically qualified for the NAIA Championships in Wichita by taking 7th place in a bracket that included the returning national champion and the current number-one ranked wrestler in the country… Terrell Kinlicheenie had one of the most exciting come-from-behind victories of his career to help put himself into position to qualify, but came just short… Thank you to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for keeping us safe and to our friends and family that have shown us unwavering support throughout the year this season."
