GSAC Tourney Preview: ACU, TMU Take Three

Glendale, Ariz. - The regular season is a thing of the past, as the Lady Firestorm's sole focus is now on the GSAC Beach Volleyball Tournament. Postseason action gets underway tomorrow from the Brookhurst Courts in Huntington Beach, California.

Arizona Christian earned the 2-seed via their 7-3 performance in conference play and will match up with 3-seed The Master's. Their next opponent in the double-elimination championship will either be 1-seed OUAZ or 4-seed Vanguard, depending on the opening results.

The 2024 Sandy Birds stapled seven wins on their resume against teams either receiving votes or NAIA Top-10, none greater than a 3-2 triumph over rival #1 OUAZ (16-6, 9-1 GSAC) on Senior Day to disrupt a team previously perfect in GSAC play.

Arizona Christian

The Lady Firestorm fell 5-0 to the NCAA Division I Grand Canyon Lopes in their final match of the 2024 regular season. Unlike the first meeting between the two teams in February, ACU was unable to push any match to a third set. Mia Scheepens/Misty McCall pieced together the strongest effort of any Firestorm pair, with sets of 21-16 and 21-17.

Amaya Brown/Emily Katzer officially closed the regular season as the winningest pair, their 15 wins being the most by a single partnership in program history. Brianna Boeckman/Aubri Green, a former number one pair, held the previous mark with 11 wins in 2022.

The steady five pair Brown/Katzer and two pair Haley Brown/Riley Brown (12-12) will each have at least two more matches in the postseason to try and improve upon their historically great bodies of work.

ACU Key Pairs

Amaya Brown/Emily Katzer - 15-9
Haley Brown/Riley Brown - 12-12
Misty McCall/Mia Scheepens - 11-11
Eliana Cho/Railey Dykstra - 3-8
Sydney Shaw/Brianna Boeckman - 3-9

Series Notes

The Firestorm split their season series 1-1 with the Mustangs to move their all-time record to 2-8. In their first showdown with The Master's, ACU had the match won through the first three doubles. The Brown sisters kicked it all off with a three-set victory (21-15, 16-21, 15-10) and Mia Scheepens/Misty McCall tacked on the final of four points. At the time, it was the program's first win over an NAIA Top-10 team since April 8, 2022 (3-2 over #4 The Master's). On March 14th, the Mustangs defeated the Firestorm 3-2 in Santa Clarita in which the outcome was decided by the number one pairs in three sets.

The Master's

The Master's University Mustangs (7-12, 5-5 GSAC) capped the regular season with two wins (4-1 over Hope International and Saint Katherine) this past Wednesday and Thursday on their home court in Santa Clarita. Annika Booker/Evi Yates, the season-long number one pair, posted a team-best 11 wins together (11-8 overall) while the number three duo Breanna Brooks/Isabela Rodriguez earned the best GSAC record (7-3). The Mustangs have four wins against NAIA Top-10 teams on their resume (highlighted by 4-1 over #1 Vanguard and 4-1 over #2 Westcliff) heading into the GSAC Beach Volleyball Tournament.
