La Verne, Calif.– ACU showed grit and resilience in their second game of the season, but a pair of timely goals lifted the University of La Verne to a 2-0 win at Ortmayer Stadium.
The Firestorm kept the Leopards' attack frustrated for much of the match thanks to the steady presence of goalkeeper Brenna Sonsini, who turned away seven shots while organizing a backline that absorbed constant pressure. ACU's defense held firm through long stretches, forcing La Verne to settle for long-range chances and limited looks inside the box.
La Verne managed its breakthrough in the 12th minute off a quick buildup, but the Firestorm settled in quickly and countered with dangerous moments of their own. Jordyn Matthews and Emily Duque each registered shots as ACU pushed into the attacking third, and the Firestorm also created opportunities on set pieces, earning three corner kicks to La Verne's one.
After halftime, ACU continued to battle, with defenders Mikayla James and Cadence Peroff anchoring a unit that bent but rarely broke. Sonsini's athletic saves—five of them in the second half—kept the match within reach until the Leopards doubled the margin in the 82nd minute.
