Flagstaff, Ariz. - Northern Arizona University (1-3) earned its first victory of the season with a 103-42 victory over Arizona Christian University (1-4), Friday, Nov. 18, in Flagstaff. ACU plays next after Thanksgiving when it hosts Biola University (4-1), Saturday, Nov. 26, at 4 p.m. Arizona time in Fultz Memorial Gymnasium.
Northern Arizona scored 14 consecutive points in a span of five minutes to lead 21-7 and prevailed 47-20 at halftime after collecting 16 offensive rebounds and turning them into 21 points and committing just three turnovers. In the second half, NAU grabbed just two offensive rebounds but made 21 of its 29 shots (.724) and 7 of its 10 three-pointers (.700) in the second half while stretching its lead to as many as 61 points three times late in the contest. NAU finished with just seven turnovers and out-rebounded ACU, 49-18, in the game while ACU committed a season-low 13 turnovers. The Lumberjacks also made 12 of their 26 three-point attempts (.462) and 9 of their 10 free throws (.900)
ACU made just 8 of its 26 shots (.308) in the first half and 18 of 51 for the game (.353), made just 2 of its 9 three-point tries (.222), and 4 of 10 free throws (.444).
Five Lumberjacks finished the game with 11 or more points, including leading scorer, freshman guard James Douglas with 18 points, 4 three-pointers, 5 rebounds and 3 assists, and junior guard Stallon Saldivar with 17 points, 2 three-pointers, 5 rebounds, 9 assists and 2 steals. Junior reserve guard Michael Dunn added 13 points, and junior reserve forward Ephraim Ekanem contributed 11 points, 6 rebounds and one blocked shot. Senior guard Durrell Norman tossed in 11 points and gathered 12 rebounds, passed 2 assists and stole the ball once, and sophomore reserve guard Luis Flores contributed 9 points with 3 three-pointers, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.
Sophomore center John Irvine (Phoenix, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy), ACU's scoring co-leader averaging 9.0 points per game, led ACU with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocked shots
and made 4 of his 9 shots. Freshman reserve forward Jared Culbert (Henderson, Nev./Coronado H.S.) added 9 points, hitting all 4 of his shots and had one steal, and sophomore forward Daniel Cornelius (Phoenix, Ariz./Phoenix Christian H.S./Vanguard University) finished with 5 points, one three-pointer, 4 rebounds and one blocked shot. Senior guard Josh Cole (Phoenix, Ariz./Westview H.S.), sophomore guard Derek James (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Alta Loma H.S./Vanguard University), and freshman Judah St. Amand (Phoenix, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy) scored 4 points each, and St. Amand also contributed 2 assists and one blocked shot.
