Phoenix, Ariz. – Rocky Mountain College (5-1) scored the first 12 points of the first half and out-scored ACU, 23-3 in the first 3:29 of the second half and defeated host Arizona Christian University (1-4), 112-74, Friday, Nov. 18, in Fultz Memorial Gymnasium on the ACU campus.
ACU hosts Rocky Mountain College again, Saturday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. Arizona time, and plays two games on the road after Thanksgiving, at Pomona-Pitzer College, Friday, Nov. 25, and at Claremont-Mudd Scripps College, Saturday, Nov. 26, both at 6 p.m. Arizona time.
The Battlin' Bears led 12-0 after the first 2:11 of the contest and 15-2 after the first four minutes. The Firestorm pared the lead to two points three times midway through the half, and a three- pointer by senior Anne Munsil (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy) with 6:35 left made the score 28-27. However, Rocky Mountain out-scored ACU, 18-2, the rest of the half and led 46-29 at halftime.
The Bears began the second half with seven consecutive points at the start of a 23-3 run that put the visitors ahead, 69-32, with 16:31 left in the game. Rocky Mountain reached its biggest lead of the game, 100-56, with 7:00 remaining. RMC out-scored ACU, 69-45, in the second half.
Nine players scored 11 or more points in the contest, four by Arizona Christian and five by Rocky Mountain. Freshman forward Sarah Beth Hock (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) contributed 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, her first double double at ACU, and also stole the ball twice. Senior guard Steffani Liscum (Tucson, Ariz./Marana H.S.), the leading scorer in the NAIA Division II, averaging 28.0 points per game, led ACU with 15 points, made 3 three- pointers and all four of her free throw attempts, and passed off two assists. Munsil added 11 points with 2 three-pointers, 3 rebounds and 2 steals, and freshman guard Liz Erickson (Peoria, Ariz./Northwest Christian School) added a season-high 11 points and gathered 4 rebounds.
Junior guard Jessica Largo (Gallup, N.M./Rehoboth Christian School) contributed 7 points, one three-pointer, 5 rebounds and 2 steals, and freshman center Jamie Heath (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird H.S.) and senior guard Elizabeth Inscore (Dayville, Ore./Dayville H.S.) each added 6 points and one three-pointer, while Largo collected 6 rebounds and stole the ball twice, and Inscore gathered 3 rebounds.
Starting guards Austin Hanser and was senior guard Micki Scally, RMC's leading scorer this season, both finished with 18 points and 2 assists. Scally finished with 7 rebounds, 2 three- pointers and one steal, and Hanser also hit one three-pointer, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. 6-foot-2 senior center Erin Cooke had 14 points on 7 of 11 shots, 9 rebounds, 2 blocked shots and 2 steals, while reserve forward Amie Jensen added 14 points, 2 three-pointers, 6 rebounds and 2 assists off the RMC bench. Reserve forward Breanna Todd added 15 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocked shots and 2 steals, and starting forward Alli Blake contributed 8 points and 5 rebounds. RMC's reserves out-scored ACU, 47-25.
ACU shot .313 from the field (26-83), made 8 of 25 three-pointers (.320) and 14 of 17 free throws (.824), committed 21 turnovers and stole the ball 12 times from the Battlin' Bears. Rocky Mountain dominated the rebound glass, gathering 58 boards while ACU managed 41 rebounds. RMC shot .539 from the field (41-76), 5 of 15 three-pointers (333) and 25 of 34 free throws (735), committed 23 turnovers, blocked 4 shots, and stole the ball 12 times from ACU.
