Phoenix, Ariz. - Dakota Wesleyan University (8-7) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 116-60 Association of Independent Institutions Conference (A.I.I.) victory at Arizona Christian University (4-10), Saturday, Dec. 17, at Fultz Memorial Gymnasium on the ACU campus.
Coached by Jerry Conner, ACU hosts Dakota Wesleyan again on Monday, Dec. 19, in Fultz Memorial Gymnasium at 3 p.m.
The Tigers led 51-19 with 4:46 left in the first half after scoring 14 consecutive points and held a 59-31 halftime margin. DWU then scored the first 11 points of the second half and led 70- 31with 17:32 remaining in the game and went on to outscore ACU, 57-29, in the second half, reaching its biggest lead of the game, 60 points, five times in the last eight minutes. The Tigers scored point 100 with 6:59 remaining.
The Tigers made 23 of their 35 shots in the second half (.657) and clobbered ACU, 62-42, in the final rebound count, and stole the ball 15 times. While the Tigers shot .550 for the game (44-80), made 9 of 27 three-pointers (.333) and 19 of 27 free throws (.704), Arizona Christian shot just .265 from the field for the game (22-83), made 5 of its 27 three-point attempts and 11 of 18 free throws. ACU committed 29 turnovers, while DWU turned over the ball 25 times.
Five Tigers scored in double figures, with sophomore center Whitnee Clayton earned a double- double with 25 points, 19 in the first half, and 11 rebounds. Clayton made 8 of her 12 shots and 9 of her 12 free throws and also blocked two shots. Off the DWU bench, guard Amanda Hart, the national leader in the NAIA Division II with 57 three-pointers, drilled 7 three-pointers in 18 attempts and finished with 23 points, including 18 points and 6 three-pointers while the Tigers were gaining control of the game. Guard Taylor Piper finished with 16 points, 11 in the second half, 4 rebounds, 7 assists and one steal, and guard Brittany Hills added 12 points, one three-
pointer, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Guard Elizabeth Lamb totaled 10 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals.
Senior guard Steffani Liscum (Tucson, Ariz./Marana H.S.), the leading scorer in both the NAIA Division II and the National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) Division I with a 23.5 point average, totaled 19 points, but scored just four in the first half. Liscum made 7 of her 21 shots and 2 of her 7 three-point attempts, gathered 5 rebounds, passed 4 assists, blocked a shot and stole the ball twice. Freshman forward Sarah Beth Hock (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) added 9 points, one three-pointer, 6 rebounds and one steal, and junior guard Jessica Largo (Gallup, N.M./Rehoboth Christian H.S.) finished with 8 points, all in the first half, one three-pointer, and 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.
Freshman forward Stephanie Brimhall (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) totaled 8 points, 4 rebounds and one steal, and senior guard Anne Munsil (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy) finished with 4 points, hitting just one of her 11 shot attempts, 4 rebounds and two steals. Freshman forward Liz Erickson (Peoria, Ariz./Northwest Christian H.S.) contributed 4 points, 4 rebounds and a blocked shot.
