Phoenix, Ariz. - Junior forward Frannie Hemmelgarn finished with 27 points, 20 rebounds, nine steals, four blocked shots and three assists and led Claremont-Mudd Scripps College (Calif.) to its third victory of the season over Arizona Christian University (4-13), 79-51, in non- conference women's basketball action at Fultz Memorial Gymnasium on the ACU campus.
Claremont-Mudd Scripps (6-5), a member of the NCAA Division III, defeated ACU by margins of 20, 27 and 28 points in three match-ups this season. Claremont led by 18 points midway through the first half, 30-12, and 44-29 at halftime, and reached its widest advantage, 79-49, with 1:24 left in the game. ACU sliced Claremont's lead to 10 points twice in the last five minutes of the first half, but scored just two points in the first 6:22 of the second half while Claremont scored 16 and led 60-31. Arizona Christian scored just one field goal and made 10 of its 12 free throws in a span of 10 minutes through the middle part of the second 20-minute period.
Coached by Jerry Conner, ACU hosts an Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference game against Johnson and Wales University (9-9) from Denver, Colo., Saturday, Jan. 7, at 3 p.m., in Fultz Memorial Gym, and also hosts a pair of home games next weekend against Northern New Mexico College (2-12), Friday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, Jan. 14, at 1 p.m.. Two of the nation's top NAIA Division II scorers go head-to-head this Saturday with number two-ranked Steffani Liscum (21.6 ppg) battling number 12-ranked Caitlin Durkin (19.2) from Johnson and Wales.
Hemmelgarn made just eight of her 20 field goal attempts and 11 of 16 free throws, grabbed 11 offensive rebounds, two more offensive rebounds than the entire ACU team, She totaled 15 points and 11 rebounds in the first half, and fell just one steal short of a triple-double. Reserve guard Shelby Barthold contributed 16 points, 14 in the first half, one three-pointer, five rebounds and three assists, and sophomore starting guard Madeline Barnes added 12 points, eight in the second half, one three-pointer, three rebounds and two assists. Jennifer Ringeon scored 10 points and had six rebounds and three assists, and starting guard Kimberly Scamman totaled six points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
Claremont shot 39.7 percent from the field for the game (29-73), 22.2 percent from three-point range (2-9) and 59.4 percent (19-32) from the free throw line. The Athenas nearly doubled up on ACU in rebounds, 65-34, survived 20 turnovers, blocked nine shots and stole the ball from ACU 13 times. ACU made just 25.4 percent of its field-goal attempts (15-59) and made just six of its 26 shots in the second half for 23.1 percent. The Firestorm shot just 10.5 percent from behind the three-point arc (2-19) and 70.4 percent (19-27) from the free throw line, committed 22 turnovers and stole the ball from Claremont eight times.
Freshman forward Sarah Beth Hock (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) came off the ACU bench and led ACU with 10 points and grabbed three rebounds. Senior guard Steffani Liscum (Tucson, Ariz./Marana H.S.), totaled just eight points, 13 fewer than her season average, made just three of her shots and missed all five of her three-point attempts. Liscum also had two rebounds, one assist and three steals. Freshman reserve forward Stephanie Brimhall (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.), Hock's high school teammate, contributed eight points, five rebounds, one assist and two steals, and senior guard Anne Munsil (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy) finished with seven points and three rebounds before fouling out with 5:54 left in the game.
Junior guard Jessica Largo (Gallup, N.M./Rehoboth Christian H.S.) and freshmen reserve forwards Liz Erickson (Peoria, Ariz./Northwest Christian School) and Jamie Heath (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird H.S.) all finished with five points, four rebounds and one steal.
