Portland, Ore. - Five Firestorm players scored 16 or more points, and Arizona Christian University (6-13, 5-3 PCAC) drained 16 three-point field goals and shot 54.3 percent from the field (50-92) and pulled out a 128-125 double overtime victory at Multnomah University (10-13, 3-5 PCAC) in Pacific Christian Athletics Conference action, Monday, Jan. 23, in Portland, Ore.
ACU has won four consecutive games in the last five nights and has emerged victorious in five consecutive games, all against PCAC opponents. ACU's current win streak began Jan. 9, with a 91-68 home win over Multnomah. Coached by Rick Roth, ACU returns home for a pair of games in Fultz Memorial Gymnasium, meeting Chapman University (11-6) from Orange, California, Thursday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m., and California State University-San Marcos (13-9) for ACU's Homecoming Game, Saturday, Jan. 28, at 4 p.m. ACU upset CSU-San Marcos, 94-89, in overtime, Dec. 19.
While ACU enjoyed one of its best shooting nights in recent history, hitting 50 of 92 field goals (54.3 percent) and 16 of 29 from beyond the three-point arc (55.2 percent). With four three- pointers in the game, senior guard Houston Friend (Phoenix, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy) became ACU's career leader with 203 three-pointers in 500 attempts in 74 career games (.406), surpassing the former record of 202 career three-pointers established in 104 career games by David Ellis in 2001-04.
Multnomah shot 47.3 percent (43-91) and made 20 of 59 from three-point range (.339). Multnomah guard Austin Hodges, the 2009 PCAC Player of the Year, finished with 49 points, making 17 of 33 shots, eight of 19 three-pointers and seven of his eight free throws.
ACU led 46-39 at the halftime intermission and let a 69-50 lead get away in the second half, as Multnomah out-scored ACU, 54-47, and tied the game at 93-93 at the end of regulation time. The score was tied 11 times in the second half and overtime periods. Both teams scored 14
points in the first five-minute overtime period, but it took a three-point field goal with 12 seconds left by sophomore guard Albert Suniga (Phoenix, Ariz./Tolleson Union H.S.), ACU's leading scorer (15.5 pg) and rebounder (5.8 rpg) this season, to tie the score at 107-107.
Multnomah scored the first five points of the second overtime and led 112-107, but ACU out- scored the Lions, 20-10, and took a 127-122 lead on a pair of free throws by ACU's freshman forward Bryant Avent (Phoenix, Ariz./Valley Christian H.S.). Multnomah followed with its 20th three-pointer of the contest, slicing ACU's lead to 127-125, but with 12 seconds left, Friend missed the first and made the second of two free throws, putting ACU ahead 128-125, and the defense killed off Multnomah's last ditch efforts at a tying hoop.
Suniga led ACU with 29 points, 3 three-pointers, seven rebounds, and four assists, and senior point guard Joshua Cole (Phoenix, Ariz./Westview H.S.) scored a career high 28 points, hitting 11 of 13 shots and all five of his three-point tries, and passed off seven assists and had one steal. Friend totaled 17 points, four three-pointers, and four assists, and sophomore forward Daniel Cornelius (Phoenix, Ariz./Phoenix Christian H.S.) led ACU with 16 points off the bench, making seven of his 14 shots. Junior guard A.J. Koch (Tucson, Ariz./Flowing Well H.S.) finished with 19 points, giving him 75 points in the last four games, and made 3 three-pointers and gathered 10 rebounds, earning his first double-double of the season.
Freshman forward Jared Culbert (Henderson, Nev./Coronado H.S.) added eight points, 13 rebounds and a blocked shots, and Avent contributed nine points, five rebounds, two blocked shots and three steals. Junior guard Jordan Augustine (West Jordan, Utah/Waterford H.S.) dished out six assists and had two rebounds and one steal.
Supporting Hodges' 49 point effort for Multnomah, junior guard Gian Cook scored 19 points with five three-pointers, five rebounds, two assists, one blocked shot and five steals, and freshman guard Steven Bustrin added 17 points, two three-pointers, two rebounds, two assists and 12 assists. Freshman forward Erik Mendoza tallied 17 points with 3 three-pointers, five rebounds, three assists and one steal, and sophomore forward David Walker contributed 16 points, two three-pointers, 14 rebounds, two assists and one steal.
ACU shot 54.3 percent from the field (50-92) for the game and 55.2 percent from three-point range (16-29) and 60.0 percent from the free throw line (12-20), outrebounded Multnomah by a healthy 56-39 margin, survived 20 turnovers, blocked three shots and stole the ball seven times. Multnomah shot 47.3 percent from the field (43-91), 33.9 percent from three-point range (20-59) and 86.4 percent from the free throw line (19-22), committed 14 turnovers and stole the ball from ACU 12 times.
