EL CAJON, Calif. - California State University-Maritime (1-9) earned its first victory of the season in 10 tries with an 86-68 collegiate women's basketball victory over Arizona Christian University (3-2), Saturday, December 1 at the San Diego Christian College Lady Hawks Classic in the Ryan Athletics Center in El Cajon, Calif. ACU, split two games this weekend, trailed by 17 points twice in the first half and by 20 points in the second half but sliced the Keelhaulers' lead to six points before going scoreless over the final 6:20 of the contest while CSUM rebuilt its lead to the final 18-point margin.
Arizona Christian, guided by second-year head coach Jerry Conner, hosts its first two home contests of the season at the Arizona Christian University Classic, Dec. 7-8, playing Johnson and Wales University (Colo.), next Friday at 7 p.m. Arizona time. Rocky Mountain College (Mont.) plays California State University-San Marcos in Friday's first game, at 5 p.m. ACU meets Rocky Mountain on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 8, at 4 p.m., with Johnson and Wales going against CSU-San Marcos at 2 p.m.
ACU, which made a school record 20 three-pointers in a 101-91 win over La Sierra Friday night, made nine of 32 from long range Saturday, and just two players reached double figures in points on Saturday compared to six on Friday. Sophomore forward Jamie Heath (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird H.S.) paced the Firestorm with 12 points, with 2 three-pointers and four rebounds, and sophomore forward Stephanie Brimhall (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) finished with 10 points and just two rebounds. Sophomore forward Sarah Beth Hock (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.), ACU's leading scorer and rebounder, finished with eight points, 10 rebounds and two assists, and senior guard Jessica Largo (Gallup, N.M./Rehoboth Christian School) contributed nine points on three-pointer, all in the first half, and had two steals.
Junior forward Aria Ham (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain H.S.) added nine points, 2 three- pointers and three rebounds, and freshmen guards Gabby Evans (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia H.S.) and Kiara White (Phoenix, Ariz./Washington H.S.) scored five points each, and Evans had five rebounds, three assists, one blocked shot and one steal while White had one three-pointer, four rebounds and four assists. Junior guard Tenisha Royston (Shiprock, N.M./Shiprock H.S./Scottsdale CC) totaled five points, five assists, two rebounds and two steals.
Four CSUM players scored 12 or more points, led by forwards Sarah Guerrero and Javier Brantley with 18 and 17 points respectively. Brantley also led all rebounders with 19 and also had 2 three-pointers, six assists and seven steals. Guard Tatjana Pitts totaled 14 points and seven rebounds, and guard Gabrielle Davis added 12 points, with 3 three-pointers, three rebounds, one assist and one steal. Guard Shante Sands finished with six points, 12 rebounds, nine assists and two steals.
ACU made 27 of 77 field goals (.351), 9 of 32 three-pointers (.281) and just 5 of 15 free throws (.333) and finished with 19 turnover, two blocked shots and six steals. CSU-Maritime connected on 30 of its 68 shots (.441), 6 of 19 three-pointers (.316) and 20 of 33 free throws (.606), out- rebounded ACU, 57-46, committed 17 turnovers, blocked two shots, and stole the ball 12 times.
CSU-Maritime went on a 19-3 run and took a 24-7 lead with 10:19 left in the first half, its first of two 17-point leads in the opening half. ACU fought back with a 14-3 run of its own and sliced the Keelhaulers' lead to 40-34 with 2:49 left before intermission and later trailed 44-38 at 1:16. CSUM scored the last five points of the first half and led 49-38 at halftime. Largo led ACU with nine points on 3 three-pointers, and Brimhall scored eight points in the first half, while Brantley recorded a double-double for CSUM in the first half with 14 points and 11 rebounds and also 2 three-pointers, two assists and five steals, and Guerrero scored 10 first-half points.
CSUM scored the first nine points of the second half and stretched its lead to 20 points, 58-38, with 17:26 left in the game, but ACU answered with a 24-10 run, including 5 three-pointers, and sliced the lead to 68-62 with 8:13 left to play, and after the teams exchanged points three times, ACU still trailed by six points, 74-68, with 6:20 left. CSUM then scored the last 12 points of the game and rebuilt its lead to 18 points, 86-68, with 26 seconds left. ACU committed five turnovers and missed five shots during its game-ending scoreless stretch.
