Espanola, New Mexico - Arizona Christian University (9-18, 5-5 A.I.I.) overcame a 42-37 halftime deficit and shot 54.8 percent from the field (23-42) in the second half to defeat Northern New Mexico College (4-20, 1-5 A.I.I.), 97-93, in Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference women's basketball action, Saturday, Feb. 11, in Espanola, New Mexico. Coached by Jerry Conner, ACU won three of its five games this season against Northern New Mexico and finishes its regular season with six more victories than the 2010-11 team.
The Firestorm shot just 29.1 percent from the field (9-32) in the first half and stayed close by making 17 of its 18 first-half free throw attempts. The host Eagles shot 44.4 percent from the field in the first half (12-27) and made 15 of 17 free throws. ACU's hot shooting in the second half helped the Firestorm surpass NNMC, which shot just 29.8 percent (17-57).
ACU shot 43.2 percent from the field (32-74), 16.0 percent (4-25) from three-point range and 85.3 percent from the charity stripe (29-34), while Northern New Mexico shot 34.5 percent from the field (29-84), 27.8 percent from behind the three-point arc (5-18) and 81.1 percent from the foul line (30-37). The teams combined for 48 fouls, 26 by NNMC, which fouled out two players. Northern New Mexico committed 17 turnovers, stole the ball from ACU nine times and blocked two Firestorm shots, while ACU committed 19 turnovers and stole the ball from NNMC
five times and blocked six shots.
Five Firestorm players scored 15 or more points. Senior guard Steffani Liscum (Tucson, Ariz./Marana H.S.) finished with 22 points, making 8-of-16 shots, and added seven rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and two steals. Liscum scored a school-record 628 points (23.3 points per game) this season and has a total of 1,085 career points in 47 career games (23.1 ppg). Liscum ranks second in the NAIA Division II in points and scoring average this season, and also ranks number one in the NCCAA Division in both categories. Liscum also ranks 10th in the NAIA Division II with 74 steals and 17th with 65 three-point field goals.
Playing in her home state, junior guard Jessica Largo (Gallup, N.M. Rehoboth Christian School) finished with 15 points, one three-pointer and six rebounds, and freshman forward Sarah Beth Hock (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) came off the bench for 15 points, made six of her eight shots, and gathered seven rebounds and ranks second on the team in scoring (14.0 ppg) and first in rebounding (8.3 rpg). Senior guard Anne Munsil (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy), the Firestorm's career three-point leader with 141, tallied 15 points, nine rebounds and a blocked shot, and, and off the bench, freshman forward Jamie Heath (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird H.S.) contributed 14 points and two three-pointers. Freshman forward Stephanie Brimhall (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) contributed five points, six rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal.
Five NNMC players scored 13 or more points, and NNMC's leading scorer this season, guard Nisa Duran, totaled 24 points, making all eight of her free throws, eight rebounds, a blocked shot and two steals, and guard Melanie Vigil added 23 points, two three-pointers, five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Center Shannon Dez finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals, and guard Erica Williams added 13 points, two three-pointers, four rebounds, two assists, a blocked shot and two steals. Off the bench, Shaniqua Perkins scored 16 points with one three-pointer, and two rebounds and also made 7-of-8 free throws.
