ACU Dominates in 3-2 Victory over Bethesda

Santa Ana, Calif. - Sophomore forward Chelsea Ruland (Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian Academy) scored a goal in each half, including what proved to be the match winner in the second half, and Arizona Christian University (3-2-1) claimed a 3-2 collegiate women's soccer victory over Bethesda University of California (1-3-1), Saturday, Sept. 15 at Santa Ana Stadium in Santa Ana California.

ACU has won three of its last four matches and have already equaled its school single-season victories record of three, also accomplished by the 2011 squad which went 3-10 for the season.

The Firestorm, coached by Carl Cecil (third season), takes a 10-day break from action and returns to the field in ACU's first-ever GSAC women's soccer match, Tuesday, Sept. 25, against Concordia University (Calif.), which ranks number 18 in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' poll, at 1 p.m. on the Scottsdale Soccer Complex, Field 5. ACU's men's team plays number six ranked Concordia at 3:30.

ACU outshot Bethesda, 23-15, and led 9-5 in shots on goal. Sophomore midfielder Mindy Kleppe (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista H.S.) gave ACU a 1-0 lead at 18:38 in the first half with a 40-yard blast for her first goal of the season. Freshman midfielder Jesslyn Jana (Placerville, Calif./El Dorado H.S.) earned her third assist of the season.

Ruland, who scored a school record five goals in a 6-5 victory over Bethesda at Rose Mofford Soccer Complex in Phoenix as a freshman last season, continued to plague the Flames as she scored her fifth goal of the season at 43:50 just before halftime off an assist from sophomore defender Ericka Haddock (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge H.S.), her first of the season. ACU led 2-0 at halftime and already led 28 in shots by intermission.

14-6

Bethesda sliced ACU's lead to 2-1 early in the second half, on a goal by Daisy Diaz at 71:08, but Ruland netted her sixth goal of the season for a 3-1 lead at 75:04, with freshman midfielder Amber Faulkner (Phoenix, Ariz./Deer Valley H.S.) earning her first collegiate assist. Bethesda scored again at 88:10 late in the second half for the 3-2 final.

Freshman goalkeeper Sydney Roller-Sotak (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert H.S.) was credited with three saves in the match, and Bethesda net minder Jenn Agustiniano saved six ACU shots on goal. Jana attempted five of ACU's shots, putting two on goal, Ruland shot four times, with three directly on goal, and Haddock tried four shots.

Ruland continues to add to her career goals and assists records with 16 career goals and four assists for 36 points in 18 career matches in two seasons, and seven of the goals have been scored against Bethesda.
