Scottsdale, Ariz. - Freshman forward Olivia Gibson (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos H.S.) scored her first collegiate goal at the 73:12 mark in the second half, giving Arizona Christian University (1-1-1) a 1-0 shutout victory over visiting Illinois Institute of Technology (0-3-1) from Chicago, Friday, Sept. 7, at Scottsdale Soccer Complex, Field 3. ACU celebrates its second home victory in 15 matches in four seasons of ACU women's soccer history and its second shutout in program history.
Coached by Carl Cecil (third season), the Firestorm host Menlo College from northern California, Saturday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m., at Scottsdale Soccer Complex, Field 3, and hosts Simpson University from Redding, Calif., Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m., in the second half of a collegiate soccer doubleheader with the ACU's men's soccer team hosting Simpson at 5 p.m., at the Scottsdale Soccer Complex, Field 1.
ACU outshot Illinois Tech, 9-7 and led 5-4 in shots on goal, but the Firestorm defense allowed just one shot to the Scarlet Hawks in the second half. ACU's freshman goalkeeper Sydney Roller-Sotak (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert H.S.) saved four I.I.T. shots on goal, all in the first half and recorded her first collegiate shutout. Illinois Tech goalkeeper Amy Arnhart saved four shots, including a leaping deflection of a 25-yard shot by freshman defender Aubrey Wimmer (Shingle Springs, Calif./Ponderosa H.S.) that seemed destined to be ACU's first goal of the night, and sophomore forward Chelsea Ruland (Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian Academy) sent the rebound wide of the net with Arnhart out of position to make the save.
Gibson took a through pass from Ruland, ACU's all-time leading scorer, with 16:48 left to play in the match and scored ACU's second goal of the season in three matches. Ruland's first assist of the season was her fourth career helper to go with 11 career goals
