PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Master's College (15-0, 2-0 GSAC), ranked number eight in the current NAIA Top 25 National Coaches' poll, defeated Arizona Christian University (4-10, 0-2 GSAC), 100-47, in Golden State Athletics Conference women's basketball action in ACU's Fultz Memorial Gym in Phoenix, Saturday, Jan. 12.
Coached by Jerry Conner, ACU plays its next GSAC game, Tuesday, January 15, against Hope International University (8-9, 0-2 GSAC) at Darling Pavilion in Fullerton, California, at 5:30 p.m. (6:30 Arizona time). Hope International lost 66-58 to Concordia (4-10, 2-0 GSAC), Jan. 12. The ACU men's basketball team meets Hope International (17-1, 2-0 GSAC) in the 7:30 p.m. second game of the GSAC doubleheader, Jan. 15. In other women's GSAC action Saturday night, no. 12 Westmont (11-3, 2-0 GSAC) defeated San Diego Christian (8-10, 0-2 GSAC), 76- 56, and no. 2 Vanguard (11-0, 2-0 GSAC) edged Biola (9-8, 0-2 GSAC, 65-56.
A short-handed Arizona Christian squad began Saturday's game with seven able-bodied players after losing two players in the last week due to season-ending knee injuries and two others who are injured and out indefinitely. The Master's College scored the game's first 17 points in the first 4:04 and also scored the first 17 points of the second half to stretch a 50-24 halftime lead to 67-24 with 14:07 left in the game. The Mustangs reached a 50-point lead, 84-34, with 7:56 remaining and stretched the lead to as many as 57 points, 93-36, with 4:10 left.
TMC took advantage of 38 ACU turnovers to score 47 of its points and also dominated in second-chance points from offensive rebounds, 21-2, and points in the lane, 36-18.
Six TMC players scored 10 or more points, led by reserve guard Millie Rivera with 16 points, 2 three-pointers, and two steals, and senior center Theresa Brown with a double-double of 12 points, all in the second half, and 12 rebounds. Forward Jacquelyn Marshall totaled 13 points, one three-pointer, five rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal, and guard Lena Rivera added 12 points, three rebounds, three assists, one blocked shot and two steals. 12 points with 2 three-pointers, two rebounds, four assists and six steals, and reserve guard Kim Iverson added 10 points, 2 three-pointers and one steal. Guard Whitney Best contributed 7 points, two rebounds, seven assists and three steals, and reserve guard Olivia Thompson added four points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists.
Sophomore forward Sarah Beth Hock (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.), ACU's leading scorer and rebounder (12.9 ppg and 7.6 rpg), totaled a double-double of 12 points and a season-high 16 rebounds, drilled a three-pointer, and passed two assists. Freshman guard Kiara White (Phoenix, Ariz./Washington H.S.) and sophomore forward Jamie Heath (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird H.S.) contributed nine points and two assists each off the ACU bench. Heath also blocked one shot and stole the ball twice and made one three-point field goal.
Senior guard Jessica Largo (Gallup, N.M./Rehoboth Christian School) scored six points with a pair of three-pointers and gathered five rebounds and blocked two shots and sophomore forward Stephanie Brimhall (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) finished with six points, all in the second half, six rebounds and two steals. Senior guard Paula Clendaniel (Tucson, Ariz./Cienega H.S./York College (Neb.) added five points, one three-pointer, three rebounds and two assists.
ACU made 18 of its 57 shots (.316), 5 of 25 three-pointers (.200) and 6 of 9 free throws (.667), committed 38 turnovers, blocked three shots and stole the ball six times from The Master's College. TMC made 38 of its 85 shots in the game (.447), 8 of 24 three-pointers (.333) and 16 of 17 free throws (.941) and out-rebounded ACU, 51-39, and grabbed 22 offensive rebounds. The Mustangs also committed just 12 turnovers, blocked four shots and stole the ball 20 times from the Firestorm.
