First-Place Westmont Defeats ACU

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - First-place Westmont College (22-3, 12-0 GSAC), ranked number six in the NAIA National Top 25 Coaches' poll, led 45-27 at halftime on its way to a 91-51 Golden State Athletics Conference women's basketball victory over Arizona Christian University (4-20, 0-12 GSAC), Saturday, February 16, in Murchison Gymnasium on the Westmont campus in Santa Barbara, California. 

Coached by Jerry Conner, ACU hosts a 5:30 p.m. GSAC game against Biola University (13-15, 3-9 GSAC), Tuesday, Feb. 19, in Fultz Memorial Gymnasium in Phoenix. The ACU men's basketball team plays the 7:30 game of Tuesday's GSAC doubleheader against Biola. 

In Saturday's other GSAC women's basketball action, number 11-ranked Master's College (23- 4, 8-4 GSAC), took over sole possession of third place by defeating San Diego Christian (15-13, 7-5 GSAC), the fourth-place team, by a 74-65 score in El Cajon, California, and number seven- ranked Vanguard University (19-2, 10-2 GSAC), the GSAC's second-place team, won 77-54 at Hope International University (12-15, 4-8 GSAC), the fifth-place team. Concordia University (5-20, 4-8 GSAC), took over sole possession of sixth place in the GSAC with a 59-54 win at Biola University, the seventh-place team. 

ACU trailed just 20-13 with 11:16 left in the first half when Westmont began a 20-1 run that propelled the Warriors to a 40-14 lead with 4:29 left, the first of three 26-point leads in the first 20 minutes of play. After ACU scored the final eight points of the first half, Westmont led 45-27 at intermission. Sophomore forward Sarah Beth Hock (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.), ACU's

leading scorer and rebounder (12.7 ppg and 77 rpg) scored eight points and gathered 10 rebounds and one steal, and senior guard Paula Clendaniel (Tucson, Ariz./Cienega H.S./York College/Arizona Western College) added seven points and one three-point field goal. 

Senior forward Tugce Canitez, a three-time NAIA National Player of the Week and GSAC Player of the Week this season, led the Warriors with 14 points and seven rebounds in the first half, and guard Jillian Wilber added 13 points and 3 three-pointers. 

Westmont scored the first 11 points of the second half and led 56-27 with 17:28 left in the game, and build its lead to 37 points, 80-43, when ACU went scoreless for 4 minutes, 21 seconds. Westmont reached its widest advantage of the game, 40 points, for the first time with 2:59 left. 

Hock finished the game with 12 points and 16 rebounds, her sixth double-double of the season, and also blocked one shot and stole the ball once. Clendaniel totaled nine points, one three- pointer and three assists, and freshman forward Cheyenne Huskey (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge H.S.) also scored nine points, made her first collegiate three-point field goal and gathered three rebounds. Junior guard Jubilee Sutherland (Glennallen, Alaska/Glennallen H.S./Eastern Wyoming CC) finished with eight points, 2 three-pointers and two assists, and sophomore forward Jamie Heath (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird H.S.) added six points, one three-pointer, four rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal, and assists and five rebounds, and senior guard Jessica Largo (Gallup, N.M./Rehoboth Christian School) contributed five points, one three- pointer and seven rebounds. 

Four Westmont players scored 11 or more points, led by Canitez who finished with 28 points, 14 in each half, 2 three-pointers, seven rebounds, four assists, one blocked shot and two steals, and Wilber, who finished with 14 points, 3 three-pointers and one steal. Guard Esther Lee totaled 11 points, 3 three-pointers, two assists and one steal, and guard Celina Gougis also scored 11 points with one three-pointer, five rebounds and four assists. Guard Larissa Hensley contributed five points, one three-pointer, three rebounds, seven assists and four steals, and forward Kelsie Sampson added eight points, eight rebounds, three assists and one steal. 

The Firestorm made 20 of 63 shots (.317) in the game and made 6 of 24 three-point field goal attempts (.250) and 5 of 7 free throws (.714), committed 21 turnovers, blocked three Westmont shots, and stole the ball from the Warriors three times. Westmont made 33 of its 77 shots in the game (.429), 10 of 28 three-pointers (.357) and 15 of 25 free throws (.600), out-rebounded ACU by a 52-42 margin with 21 offensive rebounds, passed 23 assists, blocked two ACU shots and stole the ball from the Firestorm 11 times.
