Eagles Sink Talons Into Firestorm

ESPANOLA, NM – The Northern New Mexico College Eagles defeated the Arizona Christian Firestorm women's basketball team for the second time this season, by a final of 78-72 on Friday night in Espanola, New Mexico.

With the victory, Northern New Mexico improves to 5-1 overall, while the Firestorm fall to 2-7 overall with the loss.

In the Firestorm's first game since the Thanksgiving holiday, the team showed signs of rust out of the gate. ACU managed just a 25% (9-for-35) shooting percentage in the first half. The Firestorm went a rough 2-for-10 from behind the three-point arc. Northern New Mexico also struggled shooting the ball in the first half, but not as bad as ACU. The Eagles from NNMC shot 31% (11-for-35) from the field in the first half and went just 3-of-9 from beyond the three-point arc.

In the second half, the Firestorm improved their shooting percentage to 34% from the floor, but continue to struggle from deep. The Eagles shot 40% from the field, but once again managed to get to the free-throw line more than the Firestorm. Northern New Mexico also capitalized on points off turnovers; scoring 17 points compared to just eight for ACU.

Four players for Arizona Christian scored in double-figures, with Sophia Anaya leading the way with 17 points on 5-of-13 shooting with five rebounds and an assist and a steal.

The Arizona Christian Firestorm women's basketball team will face Northern New Mexico College again tomorrow (Saturday) November 29th at 2pm in Espanola, New Mexico.
