Box Score PHOENIX, AZ – The Arizona Christian Firestorm men's soccer team found themselves down early, but stormed back Friday for a come-from-behind 2-1 victory against the University of Antelope Valley at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex.
"I'm proud of the guys in getting another win today," said ACU head men's soccer coach Jonathon Lenarz. "While we weren't lethal in finishing, we created a lot of good chances and did enough to get the victory. Our young guys are continuing to adjust to playing at this level and a couple of guys really stepped up today. We will have a big test this week as we start conference play, but I think we are up to it!"
With the victory, the Firestorm improve to 2-4 overall, while the University of Antelope Valley falls to 0-6 overall on the season.
After playing scoreless for the first 14 minutes into the game, Antelope Valley struck first in the scoring column as Josue Gramajo scored on a chip pass from Nestor Rodriguez to the near post, to give Antelope Valley the early 1-0 lead.
That goal seemed to give Antelope Valley all the momentum they needed, until ten minutes remained in the first half and the Firestorm found the back of the net. Anthony Archuleta tied the game at one on an assist through the Antelope Valley defense by David Alton.
At the half, the score was tied 1-1, but the Firestorm looked to change that quickly. In the second half, ACU elected to go with their bench and use Jorge Arauz in goal. It proved to be the difference maker as he pitched a shutout in the second half.
The Firestorm scored the game's final goal about 12 minutes into the second half on David Alton's goal on a free-kick. Alton finished the game with a goal and an assist.
The Arizona Christian Firestorm men's soccer team will next be in action on Tuesday, when they host Biola University at 7pm over at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex. The Firestorm women's soccer team will precede them at 4:30pm, and as always admission is FREE!
