Box Score The Firestorm came out of the locker room on homecoming night fired up and ready to play against the visiting Lyon College Scouts Saturday night at Shadow Mountain High School.
At the start of the day the Arizona Christian University Firestorm and the Southwestern Assemblys of God University Lions were tied atop the CSFL, both at 2-0 in conference play. SAGU would play Langston, and ACU would play Lyon. SAGU would lose their game to Langston to fall to 2-1, opening the door for ACU to stand alone at the top of the CSFL with a win.
It was cool and a light rain fell on and off during the entire game.
After the first few drives stalled out the offense came alive, capitalizing on turnovers forced by the defense. PJ Sparks started the scoring with a 24 yard run to get the Firestorm on the board first. Donovan Smith would score on a pass from quarterback Gerrit Groenewold and the defense would also score, Timothy Clayton would pick up a fumble and run it into the endzone. At the end of the first quarter the score was 21-7 ACU.
The second quarter was more of the same, Gerrit Groenewold would run for a score and Donovan Smith would catch a score, halftime had ACU up 35-13.
The second half was all ACU. In the third quarter Groenewold would throw touchdown passes to Noah Evans, Tyree Shivers and Donovan Smith.
Then in the fourth quarter the Firestorm would add two more, both on the ground, one by Cules Rose and another by Dylan Caballero.
ACU would end the night with 503 total yards of offense, 296 through the air and 207 on the ground. Quarterback Gerrit Groenewold was 18-29 for 218 yards and 5 touchdowns, PJ Sparks was the leading rusher with 65 yards and a touchdown.
Defensivly the Firestorm were led by Austin Schleier with 5.5 tackles and Dajuan Perryman with 5 tackles. Jack Fattaleh, Jalen Roebuck, Chris Walton and Luis Navarro would all record sacks, making it a difficult night for the Scouts quarterbacks.
After the victory the Firestorm now stand alone on top of the CSFL with a perfect conference record of 3-0. Coach Donnie Yantis had this to say about the victory, "What a great atmosphere tonight with our home crowd. We are building a champion both the Arizona and ACU community are key to us building this program into a championship caliber program. I thought our team completely dominated all 3 phases of the game. Our coaches have done an outstanding job preparing the past 3 weeks and our team has bought into trusting and executing the game plan. It was great to see much of our team get an opportunity to play in the game. We are now in a great position to control our destiny in the CSFL. We continue to trust in God's plan! ROLL STORM!"
