Box Score Another victory for ACU football. ACU shuts out Texas College with a 24-0 win.
The game was played in a deluge of rain at Tyler Rose Stadium in Tyler, TX. Both teams struggled to generate some offense and teams exchanged punts multiple times producing no points after the first quarter.
ACU's high tempo passing offense had trouble in the rain so Coach Yantis and his staff had to change their gameplay going into the second quarter. Their plan, hand the ball to running back PJ Sparks and Quinta Thomas. The plan was effective and beginning the second quarter PJ sparks scored from 1 yard out to put the Firestorm on top 7-0. The first half ends with ACU up 7-0.
The second half starts with not much going on offensively by either team. Teams exchanged punts to start, then ACU took their second drive of the half and marched down the field. A heavy dose of Sparks capped off with a Thomas touchdown would put the Firestorm up 14-0 to end the third quarter.
4th quarter, running behind ACU's Sparks and Thomas, the Firestorm defense was not allowing Texas to do anything. Coach Yantis was proud of how the offense line played. "A huge shoutout to the offensive line who paved the way for our backs to run for over 200 yards!" Thomas would add a score and kicker Derek Brush would add a 30 yard field goal give ACU the victory 24-0.
After the game Coach Donnie Yantis had this to say about the victory, "Winning in college football is tough, winning on the road is tougher! I am extremely proud of our team for how they handled the adversity on the road. We had to alter our gameplay and the team executed it well. The defense played outstanding! The first shutout in ACU history!"
The firestorm defense only allowed 49 yards of passing and 39 yards of rushing. Offensively ACU produced 107 yards of passing and 231 yards on the ground.
Next week Southwestern Assemblies of God will be in town, SAGU will be looking to give the Firestorm their first loss in conference and ACU will be looking to win its first ever conference championship."We look forward to the biggest football game in ACU's short history next Saturday!", says Coach Yantis. "We continue to thank God for his continued blessings on our University and our football program! RISE UP, ROLL STORM!"
