Box Score Phoenix, AZ- Proving once again that they match up well with San Diego Christian, Arizona Christian took their second set in as many matches against the Hawks. Tuesday's efforts resulted in a 3-1 SDCC win of 20-25, 25-23, 17-25, 17-25. Sophomore Hailey Settle produced a solid match with 11 kills, 15 assists, and 6 digs.
The first 14 points of the match resulted in a 7-7 tie that factored in four ties and one lead change. A block by Sophomore Leah Marcusen and Junior Samantha McCants gave ACU a 6-3 edge. A kill from McCants made the score 7-5 Firestorm. But a 4-0 run gave San Diego Christian back the lead. Arizona Christian hung around though and in fact forced ties of 17-17, 18-18, and 19-19 but could not quite complete the comeback.
Set two saw ACU fall behind by as many as five points at 13-8. However, the Firestorm kept fighting and finally reeled in the Hawks at 22-22 before taking the lead at 23-22 thanks to back-to-back service aces from Senior Kailaa Heaney. SDCC tied the score at 23-23 before Sophomore Deborah White delivered a kill and then teamed up with Settle to produce a block that sealed the set win.
Settle came up big in the set thanks to five kills and six assists.
All four ties and both lead changes of the third set happened in the first 15 points of the set. A service ace from Junior Alana Kempf gave ACU their only lead of the set. Following a 7-7 tie, the Hawks grabbed the lead at 8-7 and went on to close out the set in front.
The Firestorm opened the fourth set firing on all cylinders as they built a 7-1 edge. Despite the Hawks forcing two ties, ACU found themselves on top 14-13. But when SDCC rattled off seven straight points to take the lead that sealed the set and match win for the Hawks.
McCants finished the match with a team high 12 kills. Heaney accounted for 18 assists. Sophomore Morgan Stevens contributed 18 digs.
On Saturday, the Firestorm will spend Halloween evening hosting Hope International in Fultz Gym. The teams will serve it up at 7:00 pm.
