Firestorm Football Clinches CSFL Title

Box Score

With a final score of 61-30, ACU football dominated Southwestern Assemblies of God.

ACU and SAGU came into the game hoping to score more points with their high powered offenses, but the entire first quarter was dominated by defense. The Firestorm struggled to generate much offense, their first four possessions resulted in punts. On the other side, SAGU scored two field goals to quickly put ACU in the hole 0-6. The Firestorm would answer late in the 1st quarter with a pass from Gerrit Groenewold to Donovan Smith for a 57 yard touchdown. Firestorm up 7-6 at the end of the first.

In the second quarter both teams would score points and exchange the lead a few times. A 52 yard field goal and a fumble recovery for a touchdown by SAGU gave them a 16-7 lead halfway through the second quarter but the Firestorm offense came on the field and quickly went to work. Groenewold would toss two touchdowns and Tyree Shivers would run in a score to put ACU up 27-16 at the half. A lead that the Firestorm would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.

The ACU defense quickly made SAGU punt the ball to start the 3rd quarter and the offense started a scoring spree. Groenewold found multiple receivers all scoring touchdowns for the Firestorm, at the end of the third the score was 41-23.

The fourth was more of the same, the defense making big plays and handing the ball over to the offense. Groenewold led the offense to multiple scores. Offensively Groenewold would end the day 16 of 24 for 423 yards and 6 touchdowns. Six different receivers would score for the Firestorm helping them defeat SAGU 61-30.

With the win the Firestorm locked up the CSFL conference title in only their second year of existence. Coach Donnie Yantis had this to say about the victory, "Today was a great TEAM effort! The defense was outstanding, the offense was explosive, and our special teams did their job well. I would like to thank the Firestorm Nation and our ACU community for their overwhelming support of our entire athletic program. The crowd was great and to win the championship in front of our home crowd was exciting! Palms Down, Trust in God's plan! The Firestorm Way! Roll Storm!"
