Firestorm Pull Out Shooting Shoes Against Sea Beggars

Box Score

Pasadena, CA- On the strength of five different Firestorm scoring, Arizona Christian beat Providence Christian 5-0 on Tuesday afternoon.  Seniors Brett Martinez, Jesse Gerkey, and Bernardo Venancio along with Sophomore Anthony Archuleta and Freshman Carlos Morales all found the back of the net.

The Sea Beggars actually drilled a shot off the opening kick-off but it took a nice bounce right into the hands of Junior goalkeeper Drew Cline.  Cline made five saves on the game.

A header from Senior Caio Lima went left three and a half minutes in to put ACU in the shot column.

Taking advantage of the short and narrow field, the Firestorm were just getting started firing off shots.  By game's end they would fire off 36 shots- 13 of those shots came in the first 45 minutes.

However, it was not until their 12th shot of the half that ACU found the back of the net.  Building up from the backline Junior Jacob Drenth played a ball up the sideline for Sophomore Matt Snavely whose pass connected with Martinez who finished with a shot inside the left post.

The 1-0 score held up through the first five minutes of the second half despite Junior Nicholas Palomares, Archuleta, and Venancio peppering the goal with a shot.

Gerkey changed the score with a blast from the left side that the PCC goalkeeper could not handle.  Sophomore Ryan Scarpulla earned the assist.

From there Arizona Christian scored in about 10 minute spans.  Archuleta turned a pass from Freshman Jimmy Santiago into a goal in the 66th minute.  In the 74th minute, Venancio and Archuleta worked a nice give and go and Venancio tucked a shot inside the right post.  With seven minutes left in the contest, Venancio served up a corner kick right to the head of Morales who flicked home the game's fifth goal.

In the final two minutes, Freshman William Alcantar made easily the save of the game and maybe even season to preserve the shutout. PCC's Pablo Garcia tried to chip Alcantar from about 35 yards out.  Alcantar retreated backwards and pushed the shot just outside the post while diving toward the goal.

Head Coach Alan Berrios commented, "Team worked hard in our final road game of the year. Started a bit slow but picked up the intensity in the second half and secured the win. We have one game remaining against a tough opponent in Antelope Valley. We will work hard the rest of the week in preparation for Saturday's game."

The Firestorm will close out their season by hosting Antelope Valley on Saturday at Rose Mofford Sports Complex at 4:00 pm.
