Firestorm Have Chances In Season Finale

Box Score

Phoenix, AZ- In most areas of their match on Saturday, Arizona Christian and Antelope Valley were fairly evenly matched.  The lone exception was the final score as the Pioneers knocked off the Firestorm 5-1 in their season finale.  Sophomore Ryan Scarpulla found the back of the net as he scored for ACU in the closing seconds.

Four minutes into the match, the Pioneers tested Junior Goalkeeper Drew Cline and he proved up to the task on that shot to record his only save in his half of action.

Unfortunately, two of the next three shots taken by UAV found the inside of the goal.  Twelve and half minutes into the match, the Pioneers were up 2-0.

The Firestorm struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the first half as they only attempted three shots- two by Junior Nicholas Palomares (both high) and one from Senior Jesse Gerkey that was on target but saved.

Junior Luis Tapia sent the first shot of the second half wide left but that started much more of an offensive presence for both teams.  Junior Jacob Drenth soon followed with his own shot wide left.

Antelope Valley converted their first shot of the second half into their third goal thanks to a free kick following an ACU foul.

Drenth hit his next two shots on goal but they too were saved.

Senior Kenny McAvoy fired off three shots but all were off target with two going wide left and one sailing high.

A header by Senior Johann Zuniga following a corner required a team save by UAV but none the less ACU remained on empty in the goals column.

With under three minutes to play, the match appeared headed for a 3-0 final but that all changed in hurry.  Antelope Valley's Oscar Ramirez netted two goals in less than two minutes to give the Pioneers a 5-0 cushion.  With one last stitch effort, the Firestorm finally found pay dirt as Scarpulla took a feed from Sophomore Anthony Archuleta and found the back of the net with just eight seconds remaining.

At game's end, Antelope Valley out shot Arizona Christian by the slimmest of margins 15-14.

Prior to the start of the match, the Firestorm honored their eight Seniors- McAvoy, Gerkey, Zuniga, Bernardo Venancio, Jesus Silva, Alfonso Romero, Caio Lima, and Brett Martinez- concluding their Arizona Christian playing careers.
