Box Score Costa Mesa, CA- Playing on back-to-back nights in Southern California resulted in two losses for the Firestorm. On Friday, they fell 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-14, 25-13) at #16 Biola. At Vanguard on Saturday, ACU came up short 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-20). Senior Brenna Bailey topped with 12 combined kills.
Upon dropping the first set against the Eagles on Friday, the Firestorm countered by winning the second set. A set that featured 10 ties and four lead changes saw Junior Deborah White accounted for the first point of the second frame and the final set tying point at 23-23- both on kills. An attack error by Biola (one of 12 for BU in the set) and a service ace by Senior Haley Worden gave ACU the final two points to earn the set win.
Early lead changes and ties in both sets three and four were soon turned in favor of the Eagles as they earned the match win.
Bailey topped with seven kills but White was the lead hitter as the only ACU player with 10 or more attacks to produce over a zero hitting percentage.
Another kill from White opened Saturday's match with the Lions. But two points later the Firestorm fell behind for the remainder of the set. A block by White and Junior Neysha Laumatia tied the second set at 2-2. Down as many as five as late as 14-9, ACU knotted the set two at 17-17 thanks to a kill by Sophomore Toria Siemens. However, VUSC pulled away from there.
The third and final set opened with the Lions scoring the first four points before the Firestorm answered with a 6-0 run. ACU held the lead until 11-10 before ties at 12-12 and 13-13 saw VU move back ahead for good.
White produced five kills while hitting .400 to go along with four blocks against the Lions.
The Firestorm return home for a match on Thursday against The Master's in Fultz Memorial Gym at 7:00 pm.
