Tucson, AZ- Arizona Christian opened the outdoor portion of their schedule on Saturday by participating in the Willie Williams Classic hosted by the University of Arizona. Sophomore Karl Kleppe was a busy man as he participated in seven events.
Kleppe was part of the 100 meter race that was the most populated event by the ACU men. Kleppe also participated in the 400 meter race, 110 meter hurdles, 4x400, long jump, discus, and javelin. His highest finish as an individual was 12th in the javelin with a throw of 129'4".
Of course, the rest of the team participated as well highlighted by four top ten finishes.
Sophomore Rodrick Griffin provided the most news worthy performance as he finished sixth in 400 meter hurdles with a time of 54.60. His time is just a tenth of a second from the NAIA B qualifying mark.
Doubling up in the jumps, Sophomore Steven James participated in the long jump and triple jump. He was on the money in the triple jump as he placed second with a jump of 45'9". His long jump effort placed him in 13th with a distance of 19'8.75".
Freshman Cale Campbell made his season debut in the javelin. He impressed with a seventh place finish after a toss of 166'4".
The only relay run saw the Firestorm claim ninth place in the 4x400 meter relay with a time 3:43.64. The ACU four was Freshman Matt Castillo, Freshman Tanner Hilton, Kleppe, and Griffin.
Next weekend, the Firestorm will participate in the Puma Outdoor Invitational hosted by Paradise Valley College.
