Box Score La Mirada, CA- Facing off in a battle of top 20 teams, #10 Arizona Christian pulled off the 5-4 win on Thursday over #19 Lewis-Clark State- who became an associate member of the GSAC this season. The Firestorm used four wins in singles to propel themselves past the Warriors. Sophomore Mikayla Morgan and Freshman Tia Okano won both of their matches.
The Warriors (6-13, 2-2 GSAC) showed their strength in doubles as they won two of the three matches to take an early 2-1 lead. Morgan and Okano teamed up to win 8-2 on the second court for the ACU point.
Once the teams turned their attention to singles, the Firestorm (14-2, 6-1 GSAC) turned it up a notch and won the first four one-on-one matches. Senior Iulia Marcenco eased through a 6-0, 6-0 match on court four. Morgan was not far behind as she won 6-0 and 6-2 on the second court. Senior Desiree Jackson worked for a 6-4 first set win before cruising in the second set 6-2.
As for Okano, she had no issues in the first set as she won convincingly 6-0. But LCSC's Deanri Human made the second set far more interesting and forced Okano pull off the 7-6 win. With the win on court three, Okano remained perfect on the season with a 16-0 singles record.
The final two matches went to Lewis-Clark State though Junior Desiree Curiel did force a third set super tie break after winning the opening set on court five.
Following a day off, the Firestorm will square off with Hope International at the La Habra Tennis Center on Saturday. First serve is set for 1:00 pm. The Warriors will hang around for their third match in three days at Biola and actually play the host on Friday at 11:30 am.
