Settle For Six

Box Score

Pasadena, CA- On Saturday, Arizona Christian out shot Providence Christian 30-6 and earned a 6-1 win.  Junior Roberto Valenzuela notched two goals and two assists for the Firestorm.

After the Sea Beggars (0-1) took the first shot of the afternoon, the Firestorm (3-1) turned their first shot six minutes in the contest into a goal.  Valenzuela put a pass in the path of Senior Luis Tapia who unloaded a shot into the left side of the net.

Valenzuela had a shot blocked, Freshman Andrew Archuleta sent one wide, and Tapia placed a shot on goal before ACU found the net again.  An indirect free kick in the box was blasted into the net by Valenzuela in the 22nd minute- his first goal in an ACU uniform.

Just two minutes later, Valenzuela was in the giving mood as he laid a ball across the goal mouth and Archuleta connected on the backend for his first collegiate goal and a 3-0 advantage.

In the closing minute of the first half, Freshman Justice Farling collected his first collegiate goal after running onto a through ball from Senior Nicholas Palomares and dribbled around the goalkeeper for a tap in goal.

ACU produced their 4-0 lead by outshooting PCC 13-3 in the first half.

Ten minutes into the second half, Junior Alonso Quintero accounted for his first ACU goal by hammering home a shot from 30-35 yards out.

With a breakdown on defense in the 70th minute, ACU lost their shutout bid on a ball hit from outside the box.

Seven minutes later, Valenzuela answered with the final goal of the game after Junior Daniel Chavez played a square ball into the center of the goal.

Director of Soccer Alan Berrios stated, "Men came out with a lot energy today.  I thought it was a great response after playing a tough game the day before.  Movement off the ball was much better today.  We kept all three lines connected in the attack and in transition.  I thought that was the biggest difference in the game as it allowed us to get the ball back quickly when we did lose it.   I believe we must do a better job in the attacking third especially when you out shoot an opponent 30 to 6. Quality has to be better in regards to finishing. All in all a great start to the season.  We will continue to work hard in order to fine tune those areas of opportunities."

Come Thursday, the Firestorm will welcome Embry-Riddle (AZ) to Rose Mofford Sports Complex for 7:00 pm match.
