Box Score Hobbs, NM- Senior Makenna Newman put on a soccer clinic on Wednesday as she produced a double "hat trick" with three goals and three assists in the 7-0 Arizona Christian win over the University of the Southwest.
With a scoreless game headed into the 21st minute, Freshman Kaitlyn May served up a cross from the left side that found Junior Zoe Kalos. Kalos in turn ripped a one timer into the net. The first goal of the season for Kalos turned out to be the only goal of the day that Newman was not part of the result.
Two and a half minutes before the break, the Firestorm (2-0) broke through again. Newman took a feed from Freshman Tessa Williams at the top of the box and scorched a left footer into the back of the net.
At the break, ACU maintained their 2-0 edge as they outshot the Mustangs (0-2) 11-2 in the first 45 minutes. Over the last 45 minutes, ACU would not even allow another shot attempt.
Just over three minutes into the second half, Kalos notched her second goal of the game/season thanks to through ball from Newman resulting in another one timed goal.
Newman made the score 4-0 when she stole the ball and chipped the USW goalkeeper from 25 yards out in the 54th minute.
In the giving mood once again, Newman found Freshman Grace Koury, making her collegiate debut while playing in her home state, who scored her first goal of the year from 18 yards out. Fourteen minutes later, Freshman Marisa Ortiz collected a Newman pass and used that one touch to beat her defender and get into the box before finishing a shot into left side of the net.
For good measure, Newman added the final tally of the match in the 81st minute. Senior Gaby Torres played a ball in front of Newman who hit a strike from just inside the box. Two games into the season and Newman- with a total of five goals and three assists- has already passed her season totals from a year ago.
ACU fired off a total of 30 shots.
In the net, Senior Serenity Masterson played 74 minutes with one save and Freshman Danielle Lewis, also making her collegiate debut and playing in her home state of New Mexico, tallied the final 16 minutes to combine for the shutout.
Director of Soccer Alan Berrios shared these thoughts, "We started off a bit slow today. I thought the long bus ride was tough on the players which caused the slow start. But we settled in and connected well. We dictated the pace for the majority of the game and created many chances. It was a good win on a tough road trip. Makenna, Zoe, and Tasha Coleman really played well and led the team to victory."
A week from Friday, the Firestorm will finally get to play a countable contest in front of their home crowd as they host the current NAIA number 24 Embry-Riddle (AZ) at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex at 7:00 pm.
