Box Score Phoenix, AZ- On Saturday, ACU Men's Soccer set the GSAC season high for shots in a game as they fired off 56 shots at San Diego Christian. In the process, ACU beat SDCC 8-0. Seniors Roberto Valenzuela and Daniel Chavez both scored two goals apiece in the final home game of their careers.
Sophomore Alex Segura cracked the first shot of the day. Nobody knew there would be 55 shots to follow. Starting in the ninth minute, ACU averaged a shot a minute over an eight minute span.
In the 17th minute, Valenzuela ripped a close range shot that was saved and Junior Anthony Archuleta buried the rebound- his ninth goal of the season.
Fifteen minutes later, Valenzuela worked a perfect give and go with Archuleta and Valenzuela netted his tenth goal of the year.
Just before the half, Senior Alonso Quintero dribbled right down the middle of the field starting near midfield and making three or four defenders miss along the way to delivere his second goal of 2017 and give ACU a 3-0 cushion.
At the break, ACU had already taken an impressive 30 shots.
Less than five minutes into the second act, Junior Luis Bobadilla fed Segura who crossed a ball from the right end line and Valenzuela used his 11th goal of the season to slide into a tie for second in the GSAC for most goals scored this season.
Ninety seconds later, Bobadilla earned a goal after nice passing from Archuleta and Sophomore Damian Sanchez.
Chavez led the subs as he had a foot in the last three goals. Sophomore Marcello Meale played a ball over the top and Chavez scored his first of the season. Five minutes later, Chavez served a quick corner kick into the box and Freshman Trey Ratkovich blasted home his second goal of the year. The final goal was scored with less than 90 seconds to play as Ratkovich offered up the cross and Chavez converted the goal.
Archuleta ended his day with eight shots- or one more than the entire SDCC team. Chavez was just one behind with seven shots off the bench.
Head Coach Andrew Belleman commented, "I challenged the team to not view this as just another game but to honor the seniors and make a lasting memory of this particular game. I feel they lived up to that challenge and played a complete game. I am proud of how we finished the regular season and look forward to what's next in the playoffs."
