Firestorm Hold On Against WJU Warriors

Box Score

Rocklin, CA- On Thursday, Arizona Christian held on to beat William Jessup 2-1.  Senior Roberto Valenzuela scored for the Firestorm.  An own goal turned out to be the game winner.

The Warriors (3-9-1, 0-5 GSAC) managed the first two shots and corner kicks of the opening 45 minutes.

Just before the half was 20 minutes old, Senior Alonso Quintero attempted the first shot for the Firestorm (7-5, 2-3 GSAC) forcing a save.

Shot number two for ACU found the back of the net.  Valenzuela worked his magic and created a 1-on-1 chance to score the lone goal of the first half.  For Valenzuela, that was goal number eight on the season.

A header from Sophomore Alex Segura was saved in the 31st minute.

Freshman Diego Robles missed an opportunity with six minutes remaining in the half as his shot hit the post.

Half number one was close throughout as both teams fired off five shots.  The difference in the half was Arizona Christian put three of their shots on goal.

Segura cracked the first two shots of the second half both requiring saves- a free kick right to the keeper and then a shot from near the top of the box that needed a nice diving save to be kept out of the net.

However, Segura's second saved strike resulted in two straight corner kicks for ACU.  The second corner bounced off a William Jessup defender and into the net for an own goal.  The goal gave ACU a two goal cushion.

William Jessup attempted the next three shots- high, wide, and then in the 63rd minute in the net.  Adolfo Guzman took a feed from Christian Guzman and make it a 2-1 contest.

The Firestorm held on despite allowing the final five shots of the contest including a penalty kick for WJU that was shot off the crossbar in the 88th minute.

Head Coach Andrew Belleman stated, "We played a very good first half, managed the game well, and got a nice goal from Roberto.  I thought the team did a good job executing the game plan.  Jessup did good job in the second half pushing forward and we had a hard time getting out of our half at times.  We were a bit fortunate but are also learning how to battle and win some of these tight games.  I'm proud of the team and we will look to continue to build off of it and grow together."

On Saturday, the Firestorm will head to Menlo for a 1:30 pm match.
