Firestorm Fall In GSAC Opener

Box Score

El Cajon, CA- In a matchup of Top 20 NAIA programs, #18 San Diego Christian pulled off the slight upset as they beat #13 Arizona Christian 6-3 on Thursday afternoon.  Junior Autria Compton had a hand in two of the three ACU points.

Beginning the day in singles, Sophomore Tia Okano notched a pair 6-2 wins on court two to earn the first team point of the afternoon.  Unfortunately, the Hawks (1-0, 1-0 GSAC) won the next four singles matches completed to grab a 4-1 lead.  On court five, Compton fell 6-3 in the first set.  But she countered with 6-3 and 6-2 results in the final two sets to put ACU back in the point column.

Down 4-2 headed into doubles, the Firestorm (4-3, 0-1 GSAC) needed to sweep the three tandem matches to earn the team victory.  Compton and Freshman Melanie Dreux held up their end of the deal with an 8-5 win on court three.  But SDCC won on both courts one and two to earn the team win.

Head Coach Chris Tolson said "Women competed extremely hard.  They played well but ran into an extremely tough team.  We look forward to playing Westmont in a few days and get on track in the conference."

Before playing #21 Westmont on Saturday, the Firestorm are slated to meet up with Whittier on Friday at 4:30 pm AT/ 3:30 pm PT.  However, rain is expected in the area at some point in the day.
