Box Score Glendale, AZ- Despite a couple of opportunities to knock-off NCAA DII Colorado Mesa, Arizona Christian could not finish off the win as they fell 5-4 on Friday evening. Freshman Melanie Dreux was the only Firestorm to earn a win in both matches.
The first two doubles matches completed went quickly in favor of the Firestorm (6-4). Junior Mikayla Morgan and Freshman Elizabeth Kelley collected the 8-4 win on court one. Dreux and Junior Autria Compton followed suit with an 8-1 win on court three. Court two had several chances to close the deal but ultimately Sophomore Tia Okano and Freshman Jayci Kelley came up short 9-7.
Up 2-1 heading to singles, Dreux made the team score 3-1 thanks to a 6-0 and 6-4 win on court three.
Colorado Mesa won the next two completed matches to create a 3-3 tie before Okano won her first set in 7-5 fashion and her second 6-1 on court two. Okano's win gave ACU the slight 4-3 edge.
It all came down to the Kelley twins against the Mavericks (5-3). On court four, E. Kelley won the first set 6-4 but dropped the next two 6-1 and 6-4. With the match tied at four, attention shifted to court six- J. Kelley against CMU's Georgia Hansen. Hansen won their opener 6-3 but J. Kelley answered with a 6-3 win of her own. In the final winner take all set, Hansen posted a 6-2 result to give Colorado Mesa the victory.
On Saturday, the Firestorm are scheduled to face Hope International at 1:00 pm at the Paseo Racquet Club. However, the weather reports indicate rain is a strong possibility most of the day.
