ACU Easily Handles USW, Heads Home

Box Score

Alpine, TX- Arizona Christian Women's Tennis made quick work of the University of the Southwest on Saturday.  It was determined the match would only last until a team officially won so ACU could get back on the road to Phoenix which resulted in a 5-0 win for the Firestorm with four unfinished matches.

Opening with doubles on the neutral courts of Sul Ross State, ACU handled their business on courts two (8-3) and three (8-1).  Court one was tightly contested as Freshman Melanie Dreux and Junior Autria Compton needed a tie break to determine the winner.  Tied 8-8, the ACU duo earned the victory with the 7-4 tie break win to give ACU a 3-0 lead.

Moving on to singles, Arizona Christian needed just two points for the team win.

Freshman Gabby Gutierrez eased through her sets on court six 6-1 and 6-1.

Senior Desiree Curiel cruised to a 6-1 set one victory on court five.  She broke one less serve in the second set but still prevailed 6-3.  Her win sealed the team victory and the other matches came to an end.

Freshmen Elizabeth Kelley and Jayci Kelley were both winning their respective matches on courts three and four.  E.  Kelley won her first set 6-0 and was ahead 4-0 in the second set when action concluded.  J. Kelley won her first set 6-2 and with the other courts ready to be determined they did not even start the second set.

Due to playing longer in doubles, Dreux and Compton never started their singles matches with the team match already in hand.

The women will have a week off before returning to the courts.  They host Biola on Saturday at the Phoenix Tennis Center.  First serve is set for 12:00 pm.
