Box Score Lakewood, CO- Arizona Christian traveled to snowy Colorado to face off with NCAA Division II Colorado Christian on Friday evening. The match came down to the final singles match of the day with Sophomore Tia Okano earning the final win to give ACU the 5-4 win.
With the match originally scheduled to be played outdoors and start at 2:00 pm (local time), snowy conditions pushed the match back to 6:00 pm and indoors in the Meadow Creek Tennis Club. Starting with doubles, Junior Mikayla Morgan and Okano teamed up to win 8-2 on court one. Court three was the next match finished as Freshmen Melanie Dreux and Jayci Kelley earned an 8-4. Court two wrapped up as a CCU win with an 8-2 score.
Winning two of three doubles was big as that turned out to ultimately be the difference in the match.
Once singles play began, Freshman Elizabeth Kelley rolled through court five action with a 6-0, 6-1 win and a 3-1 ACU lead.
Court four saw Dreux fall 6-3 and 6-1 to Maddie Anderson to make a 3-2 team match.
Morgan eased through the first set 6-2 on court one. The second set with Paige Crews was much tighter and they needed an extra game to decide the 7-5 set with Morgan collecting the win.
The next two matches were won by the Cougars (7-3) with scores of 6-4 and 7-5 on court three and final results of 6-4 and 6-1 on court six to create an overall 4-4 tie in the match.
All attention turned to court two where Okano and Jenni Perkins were squaring off. Okano delivered a 6-3 win in the opening set. Okano and Perkins exchanged serves and volleys all the way to a 5-5 tie in the second set. Okano then produced a service break as she won the final two games of the day to hand ACU their 5-4 win.
On Saturday, the Firestorm (12-6) will meet up with Colorado State- Pueblo in Pueblo with first serve scheduled for 2:00 pm.
