ACU Women Secure Second Seed

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Fullerton, CA- With the need to make-up a rainout, Arizona Christian and Hope International played two matches back-to-back on Saturday.  The Firestorm eased past the Royals with scores of 5-0 and 9-0 to wrap up the second seed at the upcoming GSAC Championships.

Playing their first match to decision (once a team reaches five points and the match ends immediately), ACU and HIU played doubles first at Fullerton College.  Freshmen Gabby Gutierrez and Sarah Drella delivered the first of 14 team points when they won 8-0 in number three doubles.  Junior Autria Compton and Senior Lauryn Sullins were right behind with their 8-1 win on court two.  Freshmen Elizabeth Kelley and Jayci Kelley pulled off the 8-6 win on court one.

Needing just two points for the win, only three singles matches fired up.  Gutierrez won 6-1 and 6-0 on court five.  Drella was even better as she pitched a 6-0, 6-0 win on court six to secure the team win.  Sullins started her match on court three and won the first set 6-1 before having the match go down as unfinished.

Switching venues to the La Habra Tennis Center and playing to the full nine points, the team started the second match with singles.  The Firestorm controlled the one-on-one meetings as five of the matches saw ACU drop a total two games or less.

J. Kelley and Gutierrez both accounted for 6-0, 6-0 wins on courts four and six.  Compton and Drella dropped just one game in each of their matches on courts three and five.  On court two, Sullins won 6-2 in the first set before closing the door with a 6-0 second set win.

Court one featured E. Kelley against HIU's Jovana Milosevic.  E. Kelley won the opening set 6-2.  Milosevic made the second set much tighter though E. Kelley still won as it went final at 6-4.

In their final doubles of the day, Compton and E. Kelley were the first match done with their 8-3 win on court one.  Doubles two went final at 8-5 with Gutierrez and J. Kelley collecting that win.  The final match of the day was court three with Sullins and Drella concluding the day with an 8-1 win.

Thanks to finishing second in the GSAC during the regular season, the Firestorm secured the second seed at the upcoming GSAC Championships.  ACU will not play until Wednesday (April 19) with the opponent determined by one of the winners from the day before at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
