Women's Tennis Win One of Two Matches in Firestorm Classic

The Arizona Christian University Women's Tennis team split a pair of matches on Saturday. The Firestorm defeated Colorado Mesa University 6-3 before falling to St. Edwards, 5-0.

In the first match, ACU was able to take a 4-2 advantage into the doubles matches. In singles action, the Firestorm won the 2, 3, 4 and 5 matches in the lineup. Junior Tia Okano won 6-2, 6-2 in the number two spot, while Junior Maria Garduno was victorious in the number three spot by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore Elizabeth Kelley won in the number four spot by a score of 6-3, 6-4, and Freshman Sydney Smyth took care of business in the number five spot winning, 6-1, 6-4.

The victory was secured in the number three doubles match when Okano and Smyth won in a big win, 8-0. Garduno and Senior Autria Compton also won in the number one doubles match in a close match 8-7 (10-4).

The Firestorm battled tough in their second match of the day, but fell to St. Edwards, 5-0. After falling in all the doubles matches, the Firestorm dropped two singles matches and had four matches go unfinished.

The Firestorm will return to the court on March 8th when they host No. 13 Xavier at the Phoenix Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm.
