Box Score 2 Phoenix, AZ- The Firestorm Women's Tennis used a strong showing to sweep on day one of the Firestorm Classic. In the first match of the day, ACU defeated Holy Names, 6-3 and then went on to defeat Western New Mexico State, 6-3.
In the first match on Friday, the Firestorm took an early 2-0 lead winning at the number two and number three doubles match. In the number two doubles spot, Senior Mikayla Morgan and Sophomore Elizabeth Kelley were able to secure the 8-3 victory. In the number three doubles spot, Junior Tia Okano and Freshman Sydney Smyth won 8-5.
After dropping the number one doubles match, ACU picked up victories in the number two, four, five and six matches in singles action. Okano secured the 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 victory in the number two spot winning her second match of the day. Senior Autria Compton won in the number four spot in the lineup, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0. In number five singles action, Kelley picked up her second win of the day by a score of 6-0, 2-6, 6-1. Smyth followed suite and secured her second victory winning the number six singles match, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-5).
The Firestorm continued to roll winning their second match up of the day over Western New Mexico. The Firestorm (6-0) swept doubles action to take the 3-0 lead heading to singles action.
Morgan and Kelly won in the number one doubles match, 8-3, while Junior Maria Garduno and Compton secured victory in the number two spot, 8-6. Sophomore Jayci Kelley and Freshman Janae Watt took the number three doubles match by a score of 8-2.
ACU continued in singles action winning three of the six matchups. Morgan, Kelley and Watt all took wins in singles action to secure the 6-3 victory.
The Firestorm continued action Saturday with matches versus Colorado Mesa and St. Edwards.
