Box Score Mobile, AL- Making their fourth straight appearance at the NAIA National Championships, ACU Women's Tennis experienced déjà vu as they fell to SCAD Atlanta for the second straight year in the first round. On Tuesday, the Firestorm lost 9-0 to the Bees at the Mobile Tennis Center.
In doubles, the freshman tandem of Sydney Smyth and Janae Watt had the best showing on court three as they forced an extra game before coming up short 9-7. The other two matches were decided 8-3 in favor of the Bees.
The Firestorm dropped the first three matches of singles in straight sets. Smyth returned to the ACU lineup after over a month's absence but could not find her rhythm and fell 6-0 and 6-2 on court five. Sophomore Jayci Kelley dropped her court four match 6-3 and 6-2. Senior Autria Compton concluded her collegiate career by dropping a pair of 6-2 results on court two.
Courts one and six saw third set action. Junior Maria Garduno won her opening set on court one 6-1 before coming up a break or two short 6-4 in the second. In the super tie break third, Garduno went down 10-5. Like Garduno, Watt won her first set with a 6-4 effort on court six. But Watt was turned away 6-2 in the second and 10-6 in the super tie break third.
Despite only playing two sets, Sophomore Elizabeth Kelley and SCAD's Giulianna Hull were the last singles contest on court in the ACU/SCADA match and entire NAIA women's first round matches. Unfortunately, Hull pulled out the 6-2 and 6-3 rally dominant victory over E. Kelley.
The Firestorm conclude their season with a record of 10-12.
