Soares With Game Winner As Firestorm Defeat Warriors For The First Time

Box Score

Santa Barbara, CA - The Arizona Christian University men's soccer program (10-1-2, 4-1-1) got back in the win column with their first ever victory over Westmont (4-6, 2-3) in a 1-0 win on Thursday afternoon at Thorrington Field in Santa Barbara, CA.

Thoughts From Coach:

After the match, Head Coach Ted Krzywiecki stated, "Today was a total team effort. I am incredibly proud of our guys for putting their heart and soul into today's match. We did not play our best and had trouble finding rhythm in the attack. Westmont was difficult to break down. It was significant for us today to flip the script of the past and get our programs first win today at Westmont. We have another tough match to prepare for on Saturday against a strong Masters team."

The Game:

The Firestorm faced one of their toughest games this season as they were without their leading scorer and leading setup man on the road facing a team they had never taken a point from in Westmont. The Warriors had more of the early chances, but it was the Firestorm who got on the board first as Tiago Soares scored his first goal of the season off a great pass from Ricardo Rivas to make it 1-0 at 31:22. The Firestorm defense stood strong through the rest of the half as ACU took a 1-0 halftime lead. Both sides created chances in the second half, but the game remained 1-0. The Warriors had several late corner kick opportunities, but the Firestorm defense led by Eddie Delgadillo in goal came up with some big stops as the Firestorm took down the Warriors for the first time in program history by the score of 1-0.

Stat Tracker:

Soares: 1 goal

Rivas: 1 assist

Delgadillo: 90 minutes, 2 saves, 1 shutout

Next Match:

The Firestorm continue their road trip as they travel to Santa Clarita to take on The Master's on Saturday, October 23 at 12:30 PM PT.
