INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Two defensive juggernauts went head to head today, with both teams combined only getting off 6 shots on goal in today's match.  From the very beginning these two teams went back and forth on the defensive front, neither side giving an inch.  Gallardo got both of his saves in the first twelve minutes of play, and the Warriors were rarely found on the offensive side of the field after that.  At the end of the first half the score was knotted up at 0-0.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Firestorm played a corner kick into the middle of the field and Grub was able to get off a great shot that was knocked away by the keeper, right to the feet of Ballesteros who was able to send it into the back of the net.  The Warriors would only go on to tie the game because of a foul inside the box that led to a penalty kick goal.  Both teams continued to play great defense to secure the draw.

Thoughts from Coach Ted Krzywiecki:

"Today was a tough and classic conference game where neither team was giving away anything easy. Westmont was well organized and difficult to break down for long stretches of the game. We thought we had done enough to get a result when KG broke through and Santi followed his shot on the rebound. We certainly played well enough to win in most of the match today, but some self-inflicted wounds nearly cost us the match. We are disappointed but we will learn from this. This is a good lesson for our guys with conference matches that are won and lost on razor thin margins. It's very important for us to always control our response after a moment of adversity and stay focused for the entire match regardless of the bumps along the way. We have a tough week ahead with a trip to California, and it will be critical for us to respond with an excellent training session on Monday."

Next Match:

Conference play continues for the Firestorm with the men's team headed to San Dimas, California to take on Life Pacific University on Thursday, October 6th, kick off at 7 PM.  The team will stay in California after that match for another game on Saturday against Hope International.
