INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
From the opening whistle both teams were working hard on the offensive end. Between the Hawks and Firestorm, there were a total of 19 shots taken in the first half alone. While ACU had plenty of opportunities, it was San Diego Christian that would be first to capitalize and take a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Firestorm were able to take control in the second half, holding the Hawk's offense to just one shot for the rest of the game. The match became physical before long and led to ACU playing a man up after the Hawk's received a red card and an ejection in the 79th minute. Following the incident that led to the red card, Grub opted to take the penalty kick and drove it home to tie the game. From that point on ACU took complete control on the offensive front. In the last minute of play a San Diego Christian foul led to a free kick for the Firestorm, taken by Rivas who kicked it into the box to the head of Nicula who found the back of the net for the game winner.
Thoughts from Coach Ted Krzywiecki:
"Today was a really tough game against a dangerous SDCC team. They had a good game plan against us and it took us some time to work through some challenges in the first half. We talked at half time about maintaining belief that we could get ourselves back into the game. We knew it was going to go down to the last whistle. What impresses me most is that it seems like any player is capable of a big play in a big moment. It is the fifth time we have come back from behind this year. There is something truly special about this team. These guys are now feeling and believing that they are capable of something special this year when they work for one another. Our focus must now turn to Thursday. Menlo is a dangerous team that plays a quality brand of soccer. We have to be prepared to solve any challenges that they pose to us."
Next Match:
Men's soccer will take a trip to Sacramento to take on the Menlo Oaks and William Jessup Warriors next weekend. Following that trip the Firestorm will return home and play the last regular season game of this season against OUAZ the following weekend.
Roll Storm!
