Firestorm Excel At Power-Packed MVC Invite

Marshall, Misso.- In what is regarded as second to the national tournament, ACU Wrestling battled their way through the Missouri Valley Invite. The two-day prestigious event featured 45 teams and nearly 400 wrestlers, including 18 nationally ranked programs. Taken together, the 12 Firestorm wrestlers competing produced 39 points, good enough for 25th place on the team leaderboard.

Carlo Castagnaro was the top point earner (9.5 points) and lone place finisher, as he took eighth in the 165-pound weight class in a 45-man bracket. He defeated the #23-ranked wrestler, Zander Ernst (Morningside (IA)), to guarantee a top-eight finish.

Terrell Kinlicheenie and Channing Porter each defeated a top-25 opponent in the 141-pound weight class, contributing 4.0 and 3.5 points respectively.

In the heavy classes, Kaden Martin knocked out the #16-ranked wrestler in the 184-pound group, Chase Stieb (Doane University), to qualify for the second day of competition and ultimately earned 4.5 points. The 285-pounders, Kaiden Cisneros and Zion Longsine, won a combined seven matches, highlighted by Cisneros victory over the #18 wrestler, Byron Pierce (Midway University) and tallied 10.5 points.

COACH MICHAEL BUTTERFIELD'S THOUGHTS

"This weekend we definitely stepped up to compete as several of our guys beat nationally ranked wrestlers from across the country at the Missouri Valley Invite," Coach Butterfield said. "Jimmy Maheras competed at high levels in a tough 125 pound weight class. Terrell Kinlicheenie and Channing Porter both had great tournaments at 141 lbs having both pinned the #21 ranked wrestler in the country. Rico Robles had a close match with the #2 ranked wrestler in the country. Carlo Castagnaro was our lone placer in what is widely considered the premiere NAIA tournament in the country, where he pinned the #23 ranked wrestler in the country in the blood round to guarantee placement. Kaden Martin beat the #16 ranked wrestler to make it to day 2, but had to injury default on day 2. Kaiden Cisneros took out the #18 ranked wrestler to make it to day 2 as well, but just barely missed placing as he lost in the blood round. We are unbelievably proud of our guys and we are peaking at the right time. We thank God for the opportunity to represent our school and our faith at the national level across the country."
