ACU Outlasts HIU In 3OT, Hayden Joins 1,000 Point Club

Fullerton, Calif.- On Saturday, Arizona Christian outlasted Hope International with a 119-111 triple overtime win.  Paul Hayden became the 18th member of the 1,000 point club and moved into a tie for 15th all-time in the ACU scoring archives.

  • Needing one point to join the 1,000 point club, Hayden laid in the first two points of the game
  • The battle of lead changes and ties took off from there (21 ties and 27 lead changes by game's end)
  • ACU enjoyed a five point first half lead before HIU built as large as 10 point edge in the first 20 minutes
  • The Royals held a three point edge (35-32) at the half
  • Three minutes into the second half, Howell gave ACU their first lead of the second frame
  • Lead changes and ties were once again how the second half played out
  • Fast forward to the last 20 seconds of regulation and ACU was up six
  • But the Royals nailed three 3-pointers including a buzz beater to force overtime
  • With 75 second left in the first OT, ACU was up four but HIU came back again
  • In the second OT, ACU played catch up as they trailed four with 98 second left
  • Hayden and Flowers scored to knot the game at 103-103
  • For just the second time in ACU history, the Firestorm went to triple overtime in a game
  • HIU was took a 111-110 lead with two minutes left but ACU did not let the Royals score again
  • The Firestorm made nine of their 10 free throws down the stretch (Lorenzo Wright hit three)
  • ACU went 42-52 at the free throw line (both second most ever in a game for ACU)

"So proud of the fight in our team.  Was great to hear the guys lifting each other up in our huddles.  There were lots of opportunities to get discouraged but we stayed together and kept fighting and were fortunate to earn a tough road win."
