Pilot, Mylett Lead ACU At Sundance

Gaige Pilot fired a two-day total of 145 to secure his fifth top-10 of the season.
Buckeye, Ariz. - The Firestorm held their own in the Shootout At Sundance, claiming a solo third-place finish after 36 holes on Tuesday. Arizona Christian was within two shots of the day one lead (Texas Wesleyan, 292) before they back-tracked a bit and host school #4 OUAZ fired the lowest team score of the tournament, 291 (+3), to secure their third team title of the season.

The individual champion was also from the Spirit, #9-nationally ranked (Scoreboard) Kolby Shackelford shooting a tournament-low 68 in the final round to overtake Benedictine Mesa's James Mackie by one stroke. 

Junior Gaige Pilot notched his fifth top-10 in as many tournaments with the Firestorm, maintaining his consistent play (72.5 scoring average through this event) with scores of 71, 74. Max Mylett came in one shot behind Pilot with consecutive 73s, for his season-best 36-hole total of 146. 

Matt Campbell, the only ACU golfer to compete in all six tournaments this season, climbed five spots after a final-round 74 to finish 11th. Hector Nevarez backed up a spot to a share of 17th after scores of 75, 78.

In his third tournament with the Firestorm, Kale Parthen shaved three strokes off of his first round (82, 79) to finish in a tie for 31st.

  • Pilot and Nevarez each recorded one eagle (Pilot, par-5 18th, round two and Nevarez, par-4 7th, round one)
  • Mylett led ACU in par-5 scoring for the week (five under-par with six birdies and one bogey)
  • Pilot and Campbell shared lowest nine-hole score (34)
  • ACU shot their fourth (293) and sixth-lowest (299) 18-hole scores of the season
